A practitioners view on the ICRP review of the system of radiological protection-feedback from SRP 2023 workshop.

In 2018 the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) initiated a review and revision of the System of Radiological Protection which will lay the foundation for radiation protection (RP) standards, regulations, guidance and practice worldwide for the next 40 years. On the 25 April 2023 the Society for Radiological Protection ran a workshop at their Annual Conference presenting the current status and progress in the ICRP Review and Revision, along with inviting a number of panellist's across different areas of the profession and wider audience to share their thoughts. The outputs of the workshop are summarised in this paper showing the views from a variety of practitioners working across the RP sectors on the key factors to be considered in the review.

Sex-specific viability effects of mutations in Drosophila melanogaster.

In populations with separate sexes, genetic load due to deleterious mutations may be expressed differently in males and females. Evidence from insect models suggests that selection against mutations is stronger in males. This pattern will reduce deleterious allele frequencies at the expense of males, such that female mean fitness is greater than expected, preserving population persistence in the face of high mutation rates.

College Students With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities' Experiences, Conception, and Development of Emotional Wellness.

This study aimed to understand the ways in which college students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience and develop their understanding of emotions and emotional wellness. Semi-structured interviews with college students with IDD were conducted. The research team utilized consensual qualitative research (CQR) to analyze interviews and came to consensus in generating domains, core ideas, and a cross-analysis to answer the research question, "What are the experiences of college students with IDD in developing an understanding of emotions and emotional wellness?" Findings suggest college students with IDD have experience developing and maintaining their emotional wellness, though they may experience barriers prior to and during college enrollment.

Here we present the first case of sebaceous carcinoma of the middle ear. We discuss the treatment course and post treatment results after 11 years of follow up. We further summarize the available literature of sebaceous carcinoma of the temporal bone, which prior to this case was exclusively limited to the external auditory canal.

The role of brain serotonin signaling in excessive alcohol consumption and withdrawal: A call for more research in females.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, but current treatments are insufficient in fully addressing the symptoms that often lead to relapses in alcohol consumption. The brain's serotonin system has been implicated in AUD for decades and is a major regulator of stress-related behaviors associated with increased alcohol consumption. This review will discuss the current literature on the association between neurobiological adaptations in serotonin systems and AUD in humans as well as the effectiveness of serotonin receptor manipulations on alcohol-related behaviors like consumption and withdrawal.

Reaching Young People in Urban and Rural Communities with Mental Health and Wellbeing Support Within a Youth Sports Development Program: Integrating In-Person and Remote Modes of Service Delivery.

Field phenotyping for African crops: overview and perspectives.

Improvements in crop productivity are required to meet the dietary demands of the rapidly-increasing African population. The development of key staple crop cultivars that are high-yielding and resilient to biotic and abiotic stresses is essential. To contribute to this objective, high-throughput plant phenotyping approaches are important enablers for the African plant science community to measure complex quantitative phenotypes and to establish the genetic basis of agriculturally relevant traits.

Machine Learning Methods for Automatic Segmentation of Images of Field- and Glasshouse-Based Plants for High-Throughput Phenotyping.

Image segmentation is a fundamental but critical step for achieving automated high- throughput phenotyping. While conventional segmentation methods perform well in homogenous environments, the performance decreases when used in more complex environments. This study aimed to develop a fast and robust neural-network-based segmentation tool to phenotype plants in both field and glasshouse environments in a high-throughput manner.

Cochlear Nucleus Transcriptome of a Fragile X Mouse Model Reveals Candidate Genes for Hyperacusis.

Objective: Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a hereditary form of autism spectrum disorder. It is caused by a trinucleotide repeat expansion in the Fmr1 gene, leading to a loss of Fragile X Protein (FMRP) expression. The loss of FMRP causes auditory hypersensitivity: FXS patients display hyperacusis and the Fmr1- knock-out (KO) mouse model for FXS exhibits auditory seizures.

Subcortical serotonin 5HT receptor-containing neurons sex-specifically regulate binge-like alcohol consumption, social, and arousal behaviors in mice.

Binge alcohol consumption induces discrete social and arousal disturbances in human populations that promote increased drinking and accelerate the progression of Alcohol Use Disorder. Here, we show in a mouse model that binge alcohol consumption disrupts social recognition in females and potentiates sensorimotor arousal in males. These negative behavioral outcomes were associated with sex-specific adaptations in serotonergic signaling systems within the lateral habenula (LHb) and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), particularly those related to the receptor 5HT.

Hypothesis: The parietal notch is a reliable surface landmark of the sigmoid sinus at the sinodural angle.

Background: Currently no surface landmark approximates the anterior border of the sigmoid sinus. Additionally, the temporal line may not accurately identify the tegmen near the sinodural angle.

Kick-starting youth wellbeing and access to mental health care: Efficacy of an integrated model of care within a junior sports development program.

One productive avenue for building adolescents' personal strengths and reducing mental health problems is integrating assessment and intervention into organised sports programs. We investigated the efficacy of the RISE program, a rugby league development program for 12- to 15-year-old boys, which integrated a mental health and wellbeing system called Life-Fit-Learning. The Life-Fit System is designed to measure youth's strengths and mental health symptoms and sends mental health feedback to parents, provides group-based workshops, connects youth and parents to online psychoeducation resources, and provides individual telephone follow-up and referral with parents of youth at high-risk for mental health problems.

About face: regional allied health professional early adaptation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to significant change in allied health practice in Australia. Measures to slow virus spread have included replacing face-to-face services with telehealth services, and hands-on practice with socially distanced intervention. In the present mixed-methods, cross-sectional study, 51 allied health professionals across two public health services in regional Victoria, Australia, completed an online questionnaire with open and closed questions.

Self-reported vs RUCA rural-urban classification among North Carolina pharmacists.

Background: The various ways in which rurality is defined can have large-scale implications on the provision of healthcare services.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between self-perceived urban-rural distinction and the United States (US) Census tract-based Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) scheme that defines rurality among pharmacists.

Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data collected through a web-based survey of licensed pharmacists in North Carolina.

Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet: A Successful Strategy for Short-Term Management in Youth with Severe Obesity-An Observational Study.

Obesity affects ∼20% of children in the United States and reports of successful dietary treatment are lacking. This study aimed to determine the change in body weight in severely obese youth after carbohydrate-restricted dietary intervention. This single-center study of a carbohydrate-restricted diet (≤30 grams per day), with unlimited calories, fat, and protein for 3-4 months, examined two groups of severely obese youth of ages 5-18 years: Group A, retrospectively reviewed charts of severely obese youth referred to the Pediatric Obesity Clinic at Hoops Family Children's Hospital and the Ambulatory Division of Marshall Pediatrics, Marshall University School of Medicine, in Huntington, WV, between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2017 ( = 130), and Group B, prospective participants, referred between July 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018, followed with laboratory studies pre- and postdietary intervention ( = 8).

Intersectional targeting of defined neural circuits by adeno-associated virus vectors.

The mammalian nervous system is a complex network of interconnected cells. We review emerging techniques that use the axonal transport of adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors to dissect neural circuits. These intersectional approaches specifically target AAV-mediated gene expression to discrete neuron populations based on their axonal connectivity, including: (a) neurons with one defined output, (b) neurons with one defined input, (c) neurons with one defined input and one defined output, and (d) neurons with two defined inputs or outputs.
