Resting secretion of salivary proteins by the parotid gland is sustained in situ between periods of eating by parasympathetic stimulation and has been assumed to involve low level granule exocytosis. By using parotid lobules from ad libitum fed rats stimulated with low doses of carbachol as an in vitro analog of resting secretion, we deduce from the composition of discharged proteins that secretion does not involve granule exocytosis. Instances of grabbing objects and hitting peers were recorded in a sample of 66 British 18- to 30-month-olds, observed at home with familiar peers and seen again 6 months later. To the authors' knowledge, no previous published series has evaluated the clinicopathologic aspects of this tumor in major salivary glands.
Methods: Six cases of salivary gland KS, diagnosed between 1970 and 1998, were retrieved from the files of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Registry of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
The adoption of children reared in poor quality Romanian institutions provided a "natural experiment" to determine whether psychological privation is the cause of later deficits. Low IQ at six years was strongly related to the duration of institutional care, with malnutrition having a weaker effect. After taking both into account, there was an additional effect of a particularly marked lack of individualized care.

A case of an unusual, primary alveolar soft part sarcoma of the tongue in a 3-year-old boy is presented. Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor that presents more frequently in the head and neck region of infants and children. Objective: Recent epidemiologic studies have identified a trend of increasing cancer incidence in younger patients. The purpose of this study was to determine whether this might be reflected by different molecular mechanisms for tumor development.
Study Design: Dysplastic and malignant oral lesions from age-distinct patient populations were immunohistochemically analyzed for expression of p53 and cyclin D1.
A 57-year-old man had an expanding cystic lesion of the anterior maxilla that demonstrated destruction and disruption of local structures. A cystic odontogenic neoplasm as well as various forms of odontogenic carcinoma was suspected. Incisional biopsy and microscopic examination revealed an aggressive epithelial odontogenic tumor with histologic features suggesting malignant transformation from an odontogenic cyst.

The basic PRP caused a dose-dependent increase in sulfation of PRPg and also increased the extent to which PRPg polypeptide backbones are modified by a GAG chain. The sulfation of an endogenous proteoglycan was similarly increased in the presence of basic PRP; however, other sulfated secretory products of AtT-20 cells were unaffected.

The structures indicated that SCAMPs are highly related products of distinct genes, and that the sequence identity of an individual SCAMP between different mammalian species is almost complete. Analysis of the distribution of SCAMPs among different mammalian tissues and cells indicates parallel expression of polypeptides and cognate mRNAs, and indicates that the three SCAMPs are usually but not always expressed together.

The two major size variants, SCAMP1 (37 kDa) and SCAMP2 (39 kDa), extensively colocalize in membranes of fibroblasts and parotid acinar cells based on immunocytochemistry and velocity centrifugation, although the relative amounts of each variant may differ in selected organelles. SCAMP1, and to a lesser extent, SCAMP2, are substrates for chemical crosslinking in situ, and the recognizable crosslinking products of SCAMP1 suggest potential formation of homomultimers.

Because the short N-terminal domain of a basic proline-rich protein is necessary for efficient export from the ER, it has not been possible to evaluate the role of this polypeptide segment as a sorting signal for regulated secretion. We now show that addition of the six-amino acid propeptide of proparathyroid hormone to the proline-rich protein, and especially to a deletion mutant lacking the N-terminal domain, dramatically accelerates intracellular transport of these polypeptides.
