Radiomics is a developing new discipline that analyzes conventional medical images to extract quantifiable data that can be mined for new biomarkers that show the biology of pathological processes at microscopic levels. These data can be converted into image-based signatures to improve diagnostic, prognostic and predictive accuracy in cancer patients. The combination of radiomics and molecular data, called radiogenomics, has clear implications for cancer patients' management.

Estimating Intra-Urban Inequities in PM-Attributable Health Impacts: A Case Study for Washington, DC.

Air pollution levels are uneven within cities, contributing to persistent health disparities between neighborhoods and population sub-groups. Highly spatially resolved information on pollution levels and disease rates is necessary to characterize inequities in air pollution exposure and related health risks. We leverage recent advances in deriving surface pollution levels from satellite remote sensing and granular data in disease rates for one city, Washington, DC, to assess intra-urban heterogeneity in fine particulate matter (PM)- attributable mortality and morbidity.

Interaction with touchscreen smartphones in patients with essential tremor and healthy individuals.

Introduction: Smartphone use in biomedical research is becoming more prevalent in different clinical settings. We performed a pilot study to obtain information on smartphone use by patients with essential tremor (ET) and healthy controls, with a view to determining whether performance of touchscreen tasks is different between these groups and describing touchscreen interaction factors.

Method: A total of 31 patients with ET and 40 sex- and age-matched healthy controls completed a descriptive questionnaire about the use of smartphones.

Objectives: The proliferation of microvessels with increased permeability is thought to be the cause of peritumoral brain edema (PTBE) in metastases. The contribution of the glymphatic system to the formation of PTBE in brain metastases remains unexplored. We aimed to investigate if the PTBE volume of brain metastases is related to glymphatic dysfunction.

Coffee melanoidins are generated by the Maillard reaction during the thermal processes occurring in the journey of coffee from the plant to the cup (during drying and roasting). Melanoidins, the brown pigments formed as the end products of this reaction, have been reported in cascara, silverskin, spent coffee grounds, and coffee brew. The latter is one of the main natural sources of melanoidins of the daily diet worldwide.

Improvement of a synthetic live bacterial therapeutic for phenylketonuria with biosensor-enabled enzyme engineering.

In phenylketonuria (PKU) patients, a genetic defect in the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) leads to elevated systemic phenylalanine (Phe), which can result in severe neurological impairment. As a treatment for PKU, Escherichia coli Nissle (EcN) strain SYNB1618 was developed under Synlogic's Synthetic Biotic™ platform to degrade Phe from within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This clinical-stage engineered strain expresses the Phe-metabolizing enzyme phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), catalyzing the deamination of Phe to the non-toxic product trans-cinnamate (TCA).

QT variability unrelated to RR variability during stress testing for identification of coronary artery disease.

Stress test electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis is widely used for coronary artery disease (CAD) diagnosis despite its limited accuracy. Alterations in autonomic modulation of cardiac electrical activity have been reported in CAD patients during acute ischemia. We hypothesized that those alterations could be reflected in changes in ventricular repolarization dynamics during stress testing that could be measured through QT interval variability (QTV).

Prediction of Malignant Transformation of WHO II Astrocytoma Using Mathematical Models Incorporating Apparent Diffusion Coefficient and Contrast Enhancement.

Using only increasing contrast enhancement as a marker of malignant transformation (MT) in gliomas has low specificity and may affect interpretation of clinical outcomes. Therefore we developed a mathematical model to predict MT of low-grade gliomas (LGGs) by considering areas of reduced apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) with increased contrast enhancement. Patients with contrast-enhancing LGGs who had contemporaneous ADC and histopathology were retrospectively analyzed.

Background: A growing body of scientific works investigating the physio-pathological mechanisms behind cardiovascular disease has suggested that vitamin D deficiency could play a key role on its development. However, it remains unclear whether its active form (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)D] is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors in healthy individuals. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships of 1,25(OH)D plasma levels with cardiometabolic risk factors in a sample of healthy sedentary adults.
