Fenofibrate, a PPAR-α agonist clinically used to lower serum lipid levels, reduces cardiac remodeling and improves cardiac function. However, its mechanism of action is not completely elucidated. In this study we examined the effect of fenofibrate on mitochondria in a rat model of renovascular hypertension, focusing on mediators controlling mitochondrial dynamics and autophagy.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOcular toxoplasmosis (OT) is characterised by intraocular inflammation due to Toxoplasma gondii infection. Studies have found that interleukin 17 (IL-17) plays a central role in the pathology of OT. However, nucleotide variability in IL17 and interleukin 17 receptor (IL17R) genes has not been characterised in OT.

This study aims to investigate the effects of montelukast, a CysLTR-1 antagonist, in a mouse model of myocardial infarction (MI). C57BL/6N female mice were subjected to coronary artery ligation and received montelukast (10 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneal) or vehicle.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as potential carriers for targeted drug delivery to brain tumors. However, their use and distribution in the presence of an intact BBB and their ability to target GBM tissue are still under investigation.

These variations are mainly associated with human exposure to risk factors. In this article, the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection and the risk factors associated with infection in 1729 blood donors from São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil were analysed.

It is characterized by an inflammatory process involving macrophages activated by pro-inflammatory cytokines. The expression of microRNAs takes place during the inflammatory process and, among them, miRNA 511 regulates the activation of macrophages.

Factors like relationship duration and relationship quality or having a new partner are likely to affect how people recover emotionally from a separation, which is linked to long-term adjustment. However, prospective evidence on the role of these factors is scarce.

Head down tilt 15° (HDT15) is a simple, low cost and accessible procedure that could be applied as an emergency treatment, before recanalization therapies, with the aim to increase cerebral collateral flow. Spontaneously hypertensive rats have been shown to display anatomical differences in morphology and function of cerebral collaterals, compared to other rat strains, resulting in an overall poor collateral circulation.

Material And Methods: We evaluated 828 medical records of CRC patients from a school hospital from January/2016 to December/2020. Variables such as age, gender, ethnicity, literacy level, smoking, alcoholism, primary anatomical site, tumor staging, presence of BRAFV600E, KRAS, NRAS mutations and MSI , survival and metastasis were identified.
Multicentre preclinical randomized controlled trials (pRCTs) are a valuable tool to improve experimental stroke research, but are challenging and therefore underused. A common challenge regards the standardization of procedures across centres. We here present the harmonization phase for the quantification of sensorimotor deficits by composite neuroscore, which was the primary outcome of two multicentre pRCTs assessing remote ischemic conditioning in rodent models of ischemic stroke.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAngle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful tool in solid state sciences. Beside the direct measurement of the energy-momentum dispersion relation, the angular distribution of the photoelectron current reveals the structural environment of the emitting atoms via photoelectron diffraction effects. Moreover, in the case of molecular layers, the angular distribution of emission from molecular orbitals can be directly related to their charge density distribution via so-called orbital tomography.

The available therapies although efficacious, have narrow therapeutic window and long list of contraindications. Therefore, there is still an urgent need to find novel molecular targets that could protect the brain and heart against ischemia without evoking major side effects.

Methods: The casuistry was consisted of samples of peripheral blood and corneal epithelium from 35 unrelated patients with Keratoconus who were submitted to corneal crosslink treatment. Also, blood and corneal epithelium samples from 89 non-keratoconic patients were used to compose the control group.
Myocardial infarction (MI) is the leading cause of death among ischemic heart diseases and is associated with several long-term cardiovascular complications, such as angina, re-infarction, arrhythmias, and heart failure. However, MI is frequently accompanied by non-cardiovascular multiple comorbidities, including brain disorders such as stroke, anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairment. Accumulating experimental and clinical evidence suggests a causal relationship between MI and stroke, but the precise underlying mechanisms have not yet been elucidated.

However, recent studies have shown that the altered balance between inflammatory cytokines, proteases, and protease inhibitors, as well as free radicals and oxidants, have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of this disease. The aim of this study is to investigate whether interleukin 17 A G197A (rs2275913) and interleukin 17 F T7488C (rs763780) polymorphisms are associated with keratoconus in patients from a population of the northwestern region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAims: PCSK9 is secreted into the circulation, mainly by the liver, and interacts with low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) homologous and non-homologous receptors, including CD36, thus favouring their intracellular degradation. As PCSK9 deficiency increases the expression of lipids and lipoprotein receptors, thus contributing to cellular lipid accumulation, we investigated whether this could affect heart metabolism and function.
Methods And Results: Wild-type (WT), Pcsk9 KO, Liver conditional Pcsk9 KO and Pcsk9/Ldlr double KO male mice were fed for 20 weeks with a standard fat diet and then exercise resistance, muscle strength, and heart characteristics were evaluated.
Habitat loss is the main threat to biodiversity conservation worldwide. Some species may be particularly susceptible to the effects of fragmentation and the isolation of populations. The impacts of human activity on wild animal populations may be understood through relationships between individual genetic data and spatial landscape variables, particularly when considering local population dynamics influenced by fragmented habitats.

The aim of this project is to perform two multicentre pRCTs (one in rats and one in mice) to investigate the efficacy of remote ischaemic conditioning (RIC) in an experimental model of severe ischaemic stroke.
Methods And Analysis: Seven research laboratories within the Italian Stroke Organization (ISO) Basic Science network will participate in the study.
Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. The etiology of CD is unknown; however, genetic, epigenetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors could play an essential role in the onset and establishment of the disease. CD results from immune dysregulation due to loss of the healthy symbiotic relationship between host and intestinal flora and or its antigens.

The incomplete knowledge of the interactions between nanoparticles and living organisms is an unfavorable factor. This complex subject should be made simpler by synthesizing magnetic nanoparticles with good physical (relaxivity) and chemical (colloidal stability, anti-fouling) properties and no biological activity (no immune-related effects, minimal internalization, fast clearance).
