Article Synopsis
  • A fuzzy model is introduced to predict degradation caused by salt crystallization cycles, incorporating various environmental factors like temperature and humidity.
  • The model integrates data on specific salts and stone characteristics, including mechanical properties and porosity, to enhance accuracy.
  • Results from the study align well with experimental data from an archaeological site in Cagliari, effectively identifying different types of salt crystallization.

Salt crystallization is a particularly relevant issue in the conservation of limestones used in Cultural Heritage sites. In this study, various facies of limestones were characterized through porosimetric and mechanical tests. The samples were subjected to experiments to determine their resistance to salt crystallization by verifying the number of cycles at which 50% of them began to lose weight.

This article contains data about the values of the Dune Vulnerability Index (DVI) and the Partial Index Vulnerability (IVp) of eleven coastal dune systems located in Sardinia (Italy, western Mediterranean). Specifically, we present the values of 59 variables that summarize the condition of the studied dune systems, clustered in five groups: Geomorphological Condition (GCD), Marine Influence (MI), Aeolian Influence (AI), Vegetation Condition (VC), and Human Effects (HE). Data were collected during numerous field surveys and using aerial-photos.

Salt weathering is one of the major causes of the damage both in cultural heritage as well as in civil engineering constructions. A special case develops when there is a continuous wicking of a salt solution into a material in combination with evaporation of the moisture at its surface. In this study we are interested in the case where the absorption rate is much higher than the evaporation and as a result a salt concentration will build up at the drying surface resulting in crystallization.

Hospitalisation of an aged person is undertaken for various reasons, partly medical, and partly (even primarily in some cases) social. Exaggerated hospitalisation can upset the functional efficiency of a hospital. In some instances, admission itself may be the cause of serious psychophysical deterioration.

A case of diffuse primary amyloidosis with predominantly liver onset is reported. The absence of amyloid in the abdominal subcutaneous fat and in the rectal mucosa, the wide ECG voltage range, the absence of nephropathy and proteinuria as well as the absence of immunoglobulin involvement, are in contrast with autoptic findings of ubiquitous involvement of amyloid substance. It is considered that the pathogenesis of this disease is still open to discussion.
