Barometric pressure is an environmental factor involved in the modulation of a variety of activities in insects. Generally, a drop in barometric pressure precedes the arrival of weather conditions that can affect insect activities and life expectancy. We simulated different scenarios of pressure drop in a modified hermetic chamber and studied their influence on the host-seeking behaviour of the larvae of the robber fly Mallophora ruficauda using air stationary olfactometers.

Recessive mutations in the Parkin gene (PRKN) are the most common cause of young-onset inherited parkinsonism. Parkin is a multifunctional E3 ubiquitin ligase that plays a variety of roles in the cell including the degradation of proteins and the maintenance of mitochondrial homeostasis, integrity, and biogenesis. In 2001, the R275W mutation in the PRKN gene was identified in two unrelated families with a multigenerational history of postural tremor, dystonia and parkinsonism.

Article Synopsis
  • Almost 10% of pregnant women experience serious injuries, but how serious injuries affect them and their babies isn’t well understood.
  • A study looked at 950 pregnant women with injuries and found that about 3.4% had severe injuries, which led to more complications and higher risks for both the mother and baby.
  • Severely injured women had more surgeries and a higher chance of losing their baby, so doctors need to be very careful when taking care of them.

Background: The incidence of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is on the rise. Since there is no curative treatment, it is urgent to look for therapies that can delay disease progression and protect pancreatic β-cells. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) have shown potential in modulating inflammation and preventing β-cell destruction.

Article Synopsis
  • Doctors often use CT scans to check for injuries after car accidents, but for pregnant women, these scans can be risky for the baby.
  • A study looked at how often pregnant women involved in car crashes got CT scans at 12 different hospitals from 2016 to 2021.
  • The results showed a big difference in the number of scans given at each hospital, suggesting there should be clearer rules to keep both moms and babies safe while still finding any injuries.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at the effects of pregnancy in older moms (35 years and older) who had trauma and compared them to younger pregnant moms.
  • It found that older moms had more injuries to certain organs like the pancreas and stomach, but there was no difference in the chance of delivering the baby after trauma.
  • Because of this, they decided that older moms don’t need extra monitoring compared to younger moms after a trauma.

Background And Aims: Non-pharmacological interventions to improve patient-reported outcomes of colonoscopy may be effective at mitigating negative experiences and perceptions of the procedure, but research to characterise the extent and features of studies of these interventions is limited.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review searching multiple databases for peer-reviewed publications of randomised controlled trials conducted in adults investigating a non-pharmacological intervention to improve patient-reported outcomes of colonoscopy. Study characteristics were tabulated and summarised narratively and graphically.

Introduction: The single most important predictor of pancreas-specific complications (PSCs) after pancreatic trauma is injury to the main pancreatic duct (MPD). Pancreatography has been recommended to evaluate the integrity of the MPD. In addition, pancreatic duct stents have been proposed to prevent or treat PSC.
