Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on evaluating blood donor eligibility and infectious disease screening in Latin American countries, as there was limited information available on this topic.
  • - An international team created a 16-question survey and received responses from 82 blood donor institutions across 14 Latin American nations, revealing that most donor centers have a deferral rate of 5-25% primarily due to low hemoglobin and high-risk behaviors.
  • - The results highlighted that while most centers performed serologic tests for infectious diseases like HIV and Hepatitis, there was a lack of uniformity in donor selection processes and screening practices throughout the region.

Objectives: Glottic tumors with infiltration of the anterior/posterior commissure, and lesions with subglottic, cricoid, or cricoarytenoid joint infiltration have been highly controversial in the past, from the perspective of oncological safety. Although conservation laryngeal resection options exist, most are limited by the extent of resection proscribed by the technique and the postoperative functional results. Oncologically speaking, extended vertical hemilaryngectomy is often the optimal solution.

Due to the propagation characteristics in the 2.5 GHz band, the signal is significantly degraded by building entry loss (BEL), making coverage in indoor environments in some cases non-existent. Signal degradation inside buildings is a challenge for planning engineers, but it can be seen as a spectrum usage opportunity for a cognitive radio communication system.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces a new surgical technique called reconstructive transoral laser microsurgery (R-TLM) for treating unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) that leads to breathing difficulties.
  • The method involves augmenting the affected vocal fold and repositioning parts of it to enhance airflow while also improving voice quality.
  • In a retrospective analysis of 22 cases, all patients showed significant improvements in breathing and voice without needing further invasive interventions like tracheostomy, indicating the technique's effectiveness.

The North American Airway Collaborative (NoAAC) previously published a 3-year multi-institutional prospective cohort study showing variation in treatment effectiveness between 3 primary surgical techniques for idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS). In this report, we update these findings to include 5 years of data evaluating treatment effectiveness. Patients in the NoAAC cohort were re-enrolled for 2 additional years and followed using the prespecified published protocol.

Objectives: This study aims to demonstrate the benefit of reconstructive transoral laser microsurgery (R-TLM) in decannulation of tracheostomy-dependent patients with airway obstruction.

Methods: A consecutive series of tracheostomy-dependent patients who underwent R-TLM using multiple techniques described in our previous works, were reviewed for outcomes especially for decannulation. Full airway examination was essential to determine the anatomical and functional sites of obstruction to establish the surgical plan including R-TLM techniques needed to improve airway prior to permanent decannulation.

Objectives: This study examined the role of maternal age in the relation between social support from friends and parenting adjustment in a sample of young Latina mothers and their 18-month-old children (=168).

Methods: Hierarchical multiple regression analyses tested friend social support types (emotional, socializing, child care) as differential predictors of maternal behavior (sensitivity, cognitive growth-fostering, detachment) displayed during mother-child play interactions. To consider maternal development, the moderating role of maternal age on these associations was tested.

The vibrationally resolved spectra of the pyrene cation and doubly-dehydrogenated pyrene cation (CH˙; Py and CH˙; ddPy) are presented. Infrared predissociation spectroscopy is employed to measure the vibrational spectrum of both species using a cryogenically cooled 22-pole ion trap. The spectrum of Py allows a detailed comparison with harmonic and anharmonic density functional theory (DFT) calculated normal mode frequencies.
