Fertilizing maize at an optimum nitrogen rate is imperative to maximize productivity and sustainability. Using a combination of long-term (n = 379) and short-term (n = 176) experiments, we show that the economic optimum nitrogen rate for US maize production has increased by 2.7 kg N ha yr from 1991 to 2021 (1.

It results from different mutations in the SERPINA1 gene, leading to changes in the AAT glycoprotein, which can alter its concentration, conformation, and function. Unfortunately, underdiagnosis is quite common; it is possible that only 10% of cases are diagnosed.

Adolescence is a central phase for the development of a person's identity, involving complex multidimensional changes and increasing vulnerability to distress. This study aimed to investigate the psychological well-being of adolescent students in Brescia (Northern Italy), two years after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. An online survey investigated the extent and the reasons reported by high school students (13-21 years) for their emotional distress (ED), also considering other factors such as physical activity, nutrition, sleep and smartphone overuse.

Mechanochromic materials exhibit color changes upon external mechanical stimuli, finding wide-ranging applications in colorimetric sensing, display technology, and anticounterfeiting measures. Many of these materials rely on fluorescence properties and therefore necessitate external optical or electrical excitation. However, for broader applicability, the detection of color changes by the naked eye only or without complicated detection instrumentation is highly desirable.

The most common causes of fetal cervical masses are teratomas and lymphangiomas. Less common tumors may obstruct the fetal airway due to cervical compression.

This study investigated four automated segmentation tools on computed tomography (CT) images in female and male pelvic radiotherapy (RT) starting from simpler and well-known atlas-based methods to the most recent neural networks-based algorithms. The evaluation included quantitative, qualitative and time efficiency assessments.

Living organisms have the capacity to respond to environmental stimuli, including warm conditions. Upon sensing mild temperature, plants launch a transcriptional response that promotes morphological changes, globally known as thermomorphogenesis. This response is orchestrated by different hormonal networks and by the activity of different transcription factors, including the heat shock factor A1 (HSFA1) family.

Our study aimed to assess the long-term consequences of changes in diet, exercise and screen activity levels, sleep quality, smoke, smartphone addiction and emotional distress among a sample of Italian adolescents, 2 years after the beginning of the pandemic.
Methods: We submitted an online survey to high-school students in the province of Brescia, a city in Northern Italy, investigating changes in food consumption and in physical and screen activities, cooking skills, sleep duration and quality, emotional distress, smartphone addiction and nutrition knowledge.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the modification of total and regional body composition in early breast cancer patients treated with aromatase inhibitors (AIs).
Methods: This is a prospective, single-center, observational, longitudinal study. Four-hundred and twenty-eight patients treated with adjuvant aromatase inhibitors were enrolled at the Medical Oncology and Breast Unit of Spedali Civili Hospital in Brescia from September 2014 to June 2022.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the vertical mandibular ramus asymmetry and the hand measurements asymmetry in growing patients.
Material And Methods: Panoramic radiographs and comparative radiographs of the right and left hands of 40 patients (14 males and 26 females) between 6 and 16 years old (mean age of 11.35±1.
The plasma membrane and the membrane of endosomal vesicles are considered physical barriers preventing extracellular RNA uptake. While naked RNA can be spontaneously internalized by certain cells types, functional delivery of naked RNA into the cytosol has been rarely observed. Here we show that extracellular ribonucleases, mainly derived from cell culture supplements, have so far hindered the study of extracellular RNA functionality.

In specific cases, the active conformation is obtained spontaneously; nevertheless, many proteins need the assistance of chaperones and co-chaperones to be properly folded. These proteins help to maintain protein homeostasis under control conditions and under different stresses.

According to US evaluation, 73 of them had severe, moderate, or mild liver steatosis (NAFLD patients) and 82 had no liver steatosis (healthy controls). Fifty-eight NAFLD patients and 73 controls completed the study.

Unraveling the evolution of belowground communities and their feedback mechanisms on SOC dynamics helps embed the ecology of soil microbiome into carbon cycling, which serves to improve biodiversity conservation and carbon management strategy under global change. Here, croplands with a SOC gradient were used to understand how belowground metabolisms and SOC decomposition were linked to the diversity, composition, and co-occurrence networks of belowground communities encompassing archaea, bacteria, fungi, protists, and invertebrates.

Background: Desmoid tumours (DTs) or deep fibromatosis are benign soft-tissue tumours, sometimes locally aggressive, requiring intervention on some cases. Surgery has been the gold standard, but new less invasive techniques such as percutaneous cryoablation have proved their effectiveness, reducing health resources and complications. The study aimed to compare the total cost of percutaneous cryoablation and conventional surgery for patients with extra-abdominal and/or abdominal wall DTs, candidates for local ablative treatment in Spain.

However, sequencing only offers a one-dimensional view of the transcriptome and is often highly biased. Additionally, the 'sequence, map and annotate' approach, used widely in small RNA research, can lead to flawed interpretations of the data, lacking biological plausibility, due in part to database issues.

Potential differences for protein-assisted electron transfer across lipid bilayers or in bio-nano setups can amount to several 100 mV; they lie far outside the range of linear response theory. We describe these situations by Pauli-master equations that are based on Marcus theory of charge transfer between self-trapped electrons and that obey Kirchhoff's current law. In addition, we take on-site blockade effects and a full non-linear response of the local potentials into account.

Developing maize hybrids with improved N use efficiency can help minimize N losses and in turn reduce adverse ecological, economical, and health consequences. This study aimed to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with agronomic traits (plant height, grain yield, and anthesis to silking interval) under high and low N conditions.
