A new test for specific IgE to inhalant allergens (Phadiatop) in the screening of immediate respiratory hypersensitivity states.

Three hundred recruits were classified as either allergic or nonallergic to inhalant allergens on the basis of history, physical examination, skin testing, and RAST. Forty-nine (16.3%) were classified as allergic as they were affected by oculorhinitis and/or asthma.

Immunoglobulin deficiencies and meningococcal disease.

Five male military recruits were studied for evidence of immunologic deficiencies. Four had recovered recently from a first-episode meningococcal meningitis and one presented with recurrent meningococcemia. A selective decrease in IgG and IgA was found in one of the first-episode patients and a selective IgG2 subclass deficiency in the recurrent case.

Serum IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, salivary IgA levels and lung function in a healthy male population from the Italian Air Force: a preliminary study.

The reliability of total IgE quantitation in predicting atopic states was evaluated in a highly homogeneous group of 315 male subjects between 19 and 22 years of age, in apparent good health. A parallel evaluation of the other major Ig classes (serum IgG, IgA, IgM and salivary IgA) and a series of lung function tests were also performed. Forty-eight subjects (15%) referred history of allergy (41 respiratory and seven cutaneous).

Marked body size reduction (minus 50.5%), and delayed head and body skeletal development were noted in albino rat embryos following exposure of the mother to +/- 3 G acceleration for 3 hr/day between the 10th and 19th day of pregnancy. In addition, electron microscope examination of the inner ear showed signs of greater functional activity of the labyrinth, unaccompanied by reduction of development.
