Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children has a significant impact on morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. The degree of renal dysfunction should be calculated using pediatric-specific formulas and the degree of CKD staged; this allows for appropriate dosing of medications based on renal function and monitoring for progression and comorbid conditions including metabolic acidosis, bone disease, anemia, cardiovascular complications, malnutrition and electrolyte abnormalities, growth failure, and psychosocial issues. Introduction: The EHS clinical guidelines recommend the use of mesh to repair symptomatic primary inguinal hernias (PIH) in adult males but, in spite of this, it begs the question as to why there is still place for tissue techniques. Lack of stratification of patients according to risk of recurrence in RCTs might be a cause of results disparity, since medial and mixed are hernias with higher risk of recurrence (HRRH), whereas lateral hernias present a lower risk (LRRH).

Objective: To determine whether the lack of stratification may lead to questionable conclusions regarding the protective effect of mesh techniques and to identify other methodological flaws.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic inflammatory liver disease which, if left without treatment, can evolve into cirrhosis and possibly liver failure. Background: The detection of diagnostic autoantibodies such as antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-smooth muscle antibodies (SMA), anti-liver/kidney microsomal type 1 (anti-LKM1), anti-liver cytosol type 1 (anti-LC1) and anti-soluble liver antigen (anti-SLA) is historically associated with the diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis.

Key Messages: When autoimmune hepatitis is suspected, the detection of one or any combination of diagnostic autoantibodies, by indirect immunofluorescence or immuno-enzymatic techniques with recombinant antigens, is a pivotal step to reach a diagnostic score of probable or definite autoimmune hepatitis.

Conclusions: Diagnostic autoantibodies (ANA, SMA, anti-LKM1, anti-LC1, anti-SLA) are a cornerstone in the diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis.

Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic liver disease of unknown aetiology characterized by interface hepatitis, hypergammaglobulinaemia and circulating autoantibodies. In the last decade a number of advancements have been made in the field of clinical and basic research: the simplified diagnostic criteria, the complete response defined as normalization of transaminase levels, the molecular identification of the antigenic targets of anti-liver cytosol antibody type 1 and anti-soluble liver antigen, the detection of anti-actin antibodies, the description of de novo autoimmune hepatitis after liver transplantation for non-autoimmune liver diseases, the characterization of autoimmune hepatitis with overlapping features of primary biliary cirrhosis or primary sclerosing cholangitis, the preliminary experience with novel treatment strategies based on cyclosporine, mycophenolate mofetil and budesonide, the role played by "impaired" regulatory T cells and the development of novel animal models of autoimmune hepatitis.

Objectives: During the last decade patients with concomitant clinical, biochemical, immunoserological, and histological features of both autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) were sporadically described, but definite diagnostic criteria and specific serological markers to support the diagnosis of AIH/PBC overlap syndrome (AIH/PBC OS) are still lacking.

Our goals were to compare the frequencies of the HLA markers associated with autoimmune expression in Italian and North American patients with chronic hepatitis C and to determine genetic bases for regional differences in antibody production.
