Benefit of Improved Performance with State-of-the Art Digital PET/CT for Lesion Detection in Oncology.

The latest digital whole-body PET scanners provide a combination of higher sensitivity and improved spatial and timing resolution. We performed a lesion detectability study on two generations of Biograph PET/CT scanners, the mCT Flow and the Vision, to study the impact of improved physical performance on clinical performance. Our hypothesis was that the improved performance of the Vision would result in improved lesion detectability, allowing shorter imaging times or, equivalently, a lower injected dose.

Screening for Social Determinants of Health Among Children: Patients' Preferences for Receiving Information to Meet Social Needs and a Comparison of Screening Instruments.

To characterize optimal strategies for screening for social determinants of health (SDOH) among children, the authors performed a cross-sectional study of parents and adolescents ages ≥13 years in a community health center. Participants were queried about how they prefer to receive information about social needs resources and 2 screening instruments were compared: Well Child Care, Evaluation, Community Resources, Advocacy, Referral, Education (WE CARE) and Accountable Health Communities (AHC). In July 2019, 154 parents and 21 adolescents were surveyed.

Statistical analysis of fat and muscle mass in osteoporosis in elderly population using total body DXA scans.

Background: The magnitude of effects of lean mass and fat mass on bone health is controversial, and this study is a contribution to understand its effects on skeletal composition.

Aim: We explored the relationship of body fat and muscle parameters with bone mineral density (BMD) and age and observed if it changed when matched with body mass index (BMI) of the same study subjects.

In vertebrates, the developing eye is surrounded by a complex extracellular matrix as well as multiple mesenchymal cell populations. Disruptions to either the matrix or periocular mesenchyme can cause defects in early eye development, yet in many cases the underlying mechanism is unknown.

Exercise and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Chronic Pain: A Case Series with One-Year Follow-Up.

Introduction: There is growing evidence to support Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in the management of chronic pain. However, there is a need for further research evaluating ACT combined with physical exercise, and few studies have assessed the long-term impact of this type of intervention. This case series reports on the acceptability and impact of an ACT-based multidisciplinary pain management programme on a range of health outcomes in both the short and long-term.

Costs and factors associated with heart failure following kidney transplantation - a single-center retrospective cohort study.

The number of adults with heart failure (HF) will increase by ~50% between 2012 and 2030. Among kidney transplant recipients, HF accounts for 16% of all post-transplant admissions. We describe the burden of HF and predictors of healthcare utilization following kidney transplantation.

Theory of cell fate.

Cell fate decisions are controlled by complex intracellular molecular regulatory networks. Studies increasingly reveal the scale of this complexity: not only do cell fate regulatory networks contain numerous positive and negative feedback loops, they also involve a range of different kinds of nonlinear protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions. This inherent complexity and nonlinearity makes cell fate decisions hard to understand using experiment and intuition alone.

Diagnostic test accuracy of self-reported screening instruments in identifying frailty in community-dwelling older people: A systematic review.

Against a backdrop of aging populations worldwide, it has become increasingly important to identify frailty screening instruments suitable for community settings. Self-reported and/or administered instruments might offer significant simplicity and efficiency advantages over clinician-administered instruments, but their comparative diagnostic test accuracy has yet to be systematically examined. The aim of this systematic review was to determine the diagnostic test accuracy of self-reported and/or self-administered frailty screening instruments against two widely accepted frailty reference standards (the frailty phenotype and the Frailty Index) within community-dwelling older adult populations.

Targeting CD39 in Cancer Reveals an Extracellular ATP- and Inflammasome-Driven Tumor Immunity.

We explored the mechanism of action of CD39 antibodies that inhibit ectoenzyme CD39 conversion of extracellular ATP (eATP) to AMP and thus potentially augment eATP-P2-mediated proinflammatory responses. Using syngeneic and humanized tumor models, we contrast the potency and mechanism of anti-CD39 mAbs with other agents targeting the adenosinergic pathway. We demonstrate the critical importance of an eATP-P2X7-ASC-NALP3-inflammasome-IL18 pathway in the antitumor activity mediated by CD39 enzyme blockade, rather than simply reducing adenosine as mechanism of action.

Communicating biopsy results from breast screening assessment: current practice in English breast screening centres and staff perspectives of telephoning results.

Objective: To record how breast screening centres in England deliver all biopsy results (cancer/non-cancer) from the breast assessment visit.

Design: Online survey of 63 of 79 breast screening centres in England from all regions (East Midlands, East of England, London, North East Yorkshire & Humber, North West, South East, South West, West Midlands). The survey contained quantitative measures of frequency for telephoning biopsy results (routinely, occasionally or never) and optional qualitative free-text responses.

Medicare Claims Paid by the Federal Black Lung Benefits Program: US Medicare Beneficiaries, 1999 to 2016.

Objective: To establish the burden of totally disabling respiratory impairment among coal miners, we identified the healthcare utilization and cost for Medicare claims where the Federal Black Lung Program (FBLP) was the primary payer.

Methods: We extracted FBLP claims from 1999 to 2016 institutional Medicare data along with beneficiary, comorbidity, and claim cost information. Healthcare utilization was evaluated and compared to the 2016 Medicare population.

Teen Dating Violence in a High-Risk Sample: The Protective Role of Maternal Acceptance.

Exposure to marital conflict has been identified as a risk factor for teen dating violence (TDV). Given the high rates of marital conflict observed in families affected by paternal alcoholism, children of alcoholic fathers may be at increased risk for TDV. Positive parenting behaviors are protective against TDV in general, but whether they can attenuate the effects of exposure to marital conflict is uncertain.

Population hand preferences are rare in nonhuman primates, but individual hand preferences are consistent over a lifetime and considered to reflect an individual's preference to use a particular hemisphere when engaged in a specific task. Previous findings in marmosets have indicated that left-handed individuals tend to be more fearful than their right-handed counterparts. Based on these findings, we tested the hypotheses that left-handed marmosets are (a) more reactive to a social stressor and (b) are slower than right-handed marmosets in acquiring a reversal learning task.

Anticancer activity of a Gold(I) phosphine thioredoxin reductase inhibitor in multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma (MM), the second most common haematological malignancy, is a clonal plasma B-cell neoplasm that forms within the bone marrow. Despite recent advancements in treatment, MM remains an incurable disease. Auranofin, a linear gold(I) phosphine compound, has previously been shown to exert a significant anti-myeloma activity by inhibiting thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) activity.

Assessing Feedback Response With a Wearable Electroencephalography System.

Event related potential (ERP) components, such as P3, N2, and FRN, are potential metrics for assessing feedback response as a form of performance monitoring. Most research studies investigate these ERP components using clinical or research-grade electroencephalography (EEG) systems. Wearable EEGs, which are an affordable alternative, have the potential to assess feedback response using ERPs but have not been sufficiently evaluated.

Background: Timely and accurate communication between primary and secondary care is essential for delivering high-quality patient care.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the content contained in both referral and response letters between primary and secondary care and measure this against the recommended national guidelines.

Methods: Using an observational design, senior medical students and their general practice supervisors applied practice management software to identify 100 randomly selected adults, aged greater than 50 years, from a generated list of consults over a 2-year period (2013-2015).

Measuring adherence to therapy in apparent treatment-resistant hypertension: a feasibility study in Irish primary care.

Background: Apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (aTRH) is defined as uncontrolled blood pressure (BP) in patients taking three or more antihypertensive medications. Some patients will have true treatment-resistant hypertension, some undiagnosed secondary hypertension, while others have pseudo-resistance. Pseudo-resistance occurs when non-adherence to medication, white-coat hypertension (WCH), lifestyle, and inadequate drug dosing are responsible for the poorly controlled BP.

An evaluation of an intervention designed to help inactive adults become more active with a peer mentoring component: a protocol for a cluster randomised feasibility trial of the Move for Life programme.

Background: There is overwhelming evidence to support the promotion of physical activity in adults in terms of benefits to well-being, physical and mental health. Physical activity guidelines suggest that adults should accumulate at least 150 min of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week. In Ireland, the majority of adults do not achieve these guidelines, with costs to health and economy.

Effects of Moloney Leukemia Virus 10 Protein on Hepatitis B Virus Infection and Viral Replication.

Moloney leukemia virus 10 (MOV10) is an RNA helicase that has been shown to affect the replication of several viruses. The effect of MOV10 on Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is not known and its role on the replication of this virus is poorly understood. We investigated the effect of MOV10 down-regulation and MOV10 over-expression on HBV in a variety of cell lines, as well as in an infection system using a replication competent virus.
