Green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) possess two sexually dimorphic neuromuscular systems involved in reproductive behaviors. One controls extension of a red throat fan (dewlap), which males employ during courtship, and the other controls intromission of copulatory organs (hemipenes). Although seasonal changes in circulating androgens mediate both courtship and copulatory behaviors, testosterone has differential effects on the underlying neuromuscular morphology.
