Background: This study aimed to determine whether the iliac crests are truly at the level of L4 to L5, accounting for patient demographic and anthropometric characteristics.

Methods: We measured the umbilicus and iliac crests relative to the lumbar spine using computed tomography of patients without spinal pathology, accounting for the influences of patient height, weight, body mass index (BMI), sex, race, and ethnicity.

Results: A total of 834 patients (391 men and 443 women) were reviewed.

Case: We present a case of a 39-year-old woman at 23 weeks gestation who sustained traumatic both-column acetabular fracture and protrusio acetabuli, managed with initial traction and delayed total hip arthroplasty (THA) until after cesarean section delivery.

Conclusion: Initial skeletal traction with subsequent delayed THA may be a viable treatment option in select pregnant female patients who sustain both-column acetabular fractures. Interdisciplinary collaboration is necessary to optimize maternal-fetal health and provide patient education of procedural risk to enable informed decision making.

Introduction: Hospital systems were strained during the COVID-19 pandemic, and although previous studies have shown that surgical outcomes in healthy hip fracture patients were unaffected in the initial months of the pandemic, subsequent data are limited. This study examined the evolution of hip fracture care throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A retrospective review (level III evidence) was done of surgically treated adult hip fractures at a Level 1 academic trauma center from January 2019 to September 2022, stratified into three groups: pre, early, and late pandemic.

Background: Race and sex differences are not consistently reported in the literature. Fundamentally, anatomical differences of cervical neuroforaminal dimensions (CNFD) amongst these groups would be important to know.

The emotion of disgust in humans is widely considered to represent a continuation of the disease-avoidance behavior ubiquitous in animals. The extent to which analogs of human disgust are evident in nonhuman animals, however, remains unclear. The scant research explicitly investigating disgust in animals has predominantly focused on great apes and suggests that disgust might be present in a highly muted form.

Background: The medical therapy of prostatic symptoms (MTOPS) trial randomized men with symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and followed response of treatment with a 5α-reductase inhibitor (5ARI), an alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist (α-blocker), the combination of 5ARI and α-blocker or no medical therapy (none). Medical therapy reduced risk of clinical progression by 66% but the reasons for nonresponse or loss of therapeutic response in some patients remains unresolved. Our previous work showed that prostatic glucocorticoid levels are increased in 5ARI-treated patients and that glucocorticoids can increased branching of prostate epithelia in vitro.

The insulin receptor (IR) is a 320 kDa membrane receptor tyrosine kinase mediating the pleiotropic actions of insulin, leading to phosphorylation of several intracellular substrates including serine/threonine-protein kinase (AKT1), and IR autophosphorylation. There have been few tests of whether exposure to naturalistic or experimental disease-threat inductions alter disgust sensitivity, although it has been hypothesized that this should occur as part of disgust's disease avoidance function. In the current study, we asked Macquarie university students to complete measures of disgust sensitivity, perceived vulnerability to disease (PVD), hand hygiene behavior and impulsivity, during Australia's Covid-19 pandemic self-quarantine (lockdown) period, in March/April 2020. These data were then compared to earlier Macquarie university, and other local, and overseas student cohorts, to determine if disgust sensitivity and the other measures, were different in the lockdown sample.

Castration-resistant prostate cancer can be treated with the antiandrogen enzalutamide, but responses and duration of response are variable. To identify genes that support enzalutamide resistance, we performed a short hairpin RNA (shRNA) screen in the bone-homing, castration-resistant prostate cancer cell line, C4-2B. We identified 11 genes ( and ) whose loss resulted in decreased cell survival in response to enzalutamide.

In Studies 1 to 3, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on a large pool of items resulting in a 12-item scale with two factors: Persuadability and Insensitivity to cues of untrustworthiness. Brain iron deposits (IDs) are inversely associated with cognitive function in community-dwelling older people, but their association with cognition after ischemic stroke, and whether that differs from microbleeds, is unknown. We quantified basal ganglia IDs (BGID) and microbleeds (BMBs) semi-automatically on brain magnetic resonance images from patients with minor stroke (NIHSS < 7), at presentation and 12 months after stroke. We administered the National Adult Reading Test (NART, estimates premorbid or peak adult cognition) and the Revised Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE-R; current cognition) at 1 and 12 months after stroke.

Biological samples are frequently stained with heavy metals in preparation for examining the macro, micro and ultra-structure using X-ray microtomography and electron microscopy. A single X-ray microtomography scan reveals detailed 3D structure based on staining density, yet it lacks both material composition and functional information. Using a commercially available polychromatic X-ray source, energy integrating detectors and a two-scan configuration labelled by their energy- "High" and "Low", we demonstrate how a specific element, here shown with iron, can be detected from a mixture with other heavy metals.
