Brain abscesses are invasive infections of the central nervous system with a high level of treatment complexity especially in pediatric patients. Here, we describe a 3-month-old infant with multiple brain abscesses caused by methicillin-susceptible (MSSA). The patient was initially treated with empirical antibiotics (ceftriaxone, metronidazole, vancomycin).

Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT), consisting of aspirin and a P2Y12 inhibitor, is the standard treatment for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES). However, the optimal duration of DAPT remains debated due to the need to balance ischemic event reduction with bleeding risks. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of ticagrelor monotherapy after short-duration DAPT (1-3 months) compared to extended DAPT, focusing on major bleeding and cardiovascular outcomes.

Background: The pathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by atypical brain network organization and dynamics. Although functional brain networks adaptively reconfigure across cognitive contexts, previous studies have largely focused on network dysfunction during the resting-state. This preliminary study examined how functional brain network organization and dynamics flexibly reconfigure across rest and two cognitive control tasks with different cognitive demands in 30 children with ADHD and 36 typically developing (TD) children (8-12 years).

Background And Purpose: Animal studies have suggested that valproic acid (VPA) is neuroprotective in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Potential mechanisms include an effect on cortical spreading depolarizations (CSD), apoptosis, blood-brain barrier integrity, and inflammatory pathways. However, the effect of VPA on SAH outcomes in humans has not been investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigates whether P2Y inhibitor monotherapy (P2Y-I) is more effective than aspirin after stopping dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) in patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
  • The updated meta-analysis includes three direct comparisons between P2Y-I and aspirin, revealing that P2Y-I leads to a 39% lower risk of myocardial infarction without an increase in bleeding risk.
  • Results suggest that P2Y-I provides a safer option for preventing heart attacks compared to aspirin, though clinicians should carefully choose which patients might benefit the most from this treatment.

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exhibit impairments in response inhibition. These impairments are ameliorated by modulating dopamine (DA) via the administration of rewards or stimulant medication like methylphenidate (MPH). It is currently unclear whether intrinsic DA availability impacts these effects of dopaminergic modulation on response inhibition.

Comparative genomics is a research field that allows comparison between genomes of different life forms providing information on the organization of the compared genomes, both in terms of structure and encoded functions. Moreover, this approach provides a powerful tool to study and understand the evolutionary changes and adaptation among organisms. Comparative genomics can be used to compare phylogenetically close marine organisms showing different vital strategies and lifestyles and obtain information regarding specific adaptations and/or their evolutionary history.

LACTB is a relatively unknown mitochondrial protein structurally related to the bacterial penicillin-binding and beta-lactamase superfamily of serine proteases. LACTB has recently gained an increased interest due to its potential role in lipid metabolism and tumorigenesis. To date, around ninety studies pertaining to LACTB have been published, but the exact biochemical and cell biological function of LACTB still remain elusive.

Though Parkinson's disease is primarily defined as a movement disorder, it is also characterized by a range of non-motor symptoms, including cognitive decline. The onset and progression of cognitive decline in individuals with Parkinson's disease is variable, and the neurobiological mechanisms that contribute to, or protect against, cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease are poorly understood. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data collected from individuals with Parkinson's disease with and without cognitive decline, we examined the relationship between topological brain-network resilience and cognition in Parkinson's disease.

Study Objectives: Current neurocritical care guidelines recommend 50 IU/kg four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4PCC) for factor Xa inhibitor (FXaI) reversal in intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) based on few clinical studies conducted among non-ICH subjects. Two recent studies suggest that low-dose (25 IU/kg) 4PCC may be similar to 50 IU/kg in reversal of FXaI in ICH, and both 25 and 50 IU/kg doses are used in clinical practice for this indication. To our knowledge, no studies have directly compared 25 IU/kg versus 50 IU/kg 4PCC for FXaI reversal in ICH.

Introduction: Radiation-induced breast angiosarcoma is a severe but rare late complication in the breast-preserving management of breast cancer through surgery and radiotherapy. Often the initial diagnosis is complex given its relatively anodyne nature and the fact that it usually presents in the form of typically multifocal reddish-purple papular skin lesions.

Presentation Of The Case: We describe the clinical and pathologic findings of a 79-year-old woman, who developed a radiation-induced breast angiosarcoma after around 8 years.

Metformin is the first line drug for type 2 diabetes but its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we have studied the acute effect of a therapeutically relevant intrahepatic concentration of metformin on glucose production from lactate. We selected the perfused rat liver as experimental system since it enables the complete control of drug dosage.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder causing movement disabilities and several non-motor symptoms in afflicted patients. Recent studies in animal models of PD and analyses of brain specimen from PD patients revealed an increase in the level and activity of the non-receptor tyrosine kinase Abelson (c-Abl) in dopaminergic neurons with phosphorylation of protein substrates, such as α-synuclein and the E3 ubiquitin ligase, Parkin. Most significantly inhibition of c-Abl kinase activity by small molecular compounds used in the clinic to treat human leukemia have shown promising neuroprotective effects in cell and animal models of PD.

Neuroendocrine features are detectable in carcinomas of the breast either as scattered cells, that are recognized by their expression of neuroendocrine cell markers. Instead, pure breast carcinomas with neuroendocrine features (NEBC) are very rare and represent <1% of all breast cancer. Usually NEBC may be well or poorly differentiated and more frequent in older woman.
