We present the case of a patient with known situs inversus referred for cardiac catheterization, which revealed a chronic total occlusion of the right coronary artery. Situs inversus, a rare congenital abnormality, is a term used to describe the inverted position of the chest and abdominal organs. Cardiac catheterization is rare in patients with this particular abnormality.

Interferon lambda (IFN-λ) (type III IFN) is constitutively secreted from human placental cells in culture and reduces Zika virus (ZIKV) transplacental transmission in mice. However, the roles of IFN-λ during healthy pregnancy and in restricting congenital infection remain unclear. Here, we used mice lacking the IFN-λ receptor () to generate pregnancies lacking either maternal or fetal IFN-λ responsiveness and found that the antiviral effect of IFN-λ resulted from signaling exclusively in maternal tissues.

Immune regulation at the maternal-fetal interface is complex due to conflicting immunological objectives: protection of the fetus from maternal pathogens and prevention of immune-mediated rejection of the semiallogeneic fetus and placenta. Interferon (IFN) signaling plays an important role in restricting congenital infections as well as in the physiology of healthy pregnancies. In this review, we discuss the antiviral and pathogenic effects of type I IFN (IFN-, IFN-), type II IFN (IFN-), and type III IFN (IFN-) during pregnancy, with an emphasis on mouse and non-human primate models of congenital Zika virus infection.

In this prospective, randomized controlled study, we aim to compare the performance outcomes of standard catheters with the radial artery-specific catheter. Over the past decade, transradial cardiac catheterization has gained widespread popularity because of its low complication rates compared with transfemoral access. Operators have the choice of using either standard catheters (used for both transfemoral and transradial approach, with need for separate catheter use for either right or left coronary artery engagement) or a dedicated radial artery catheter, which is specifically designed to engage both coronary arteries through radial artery access.

Objectives: To assess whether the neurological or gastrointestinal adverse effects of ritonavir correlate with parameters of ritonavir systemic exposure.

Methods: Peak (Cmax) and trough (Cmin) ritonavir plasma levels were compared in 11 patients experiencing side-effects (group A) versus 10 patients without side-effects (group B). Ritonavir was administered with the following escalation dosing scheme: 300, 400, 500 mg twice a day for 3, 4, and 5 days, respectively, then the full dose of 600 mg twice a day.

However, it is not known if clindamycin achieves inhibitory concentrations at the site of infection. The population pharmacokinetics of dapsone were examined in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients receiving dapsone at a dosage of 100 mg twice weekly for the prevention of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Nonlinear mixed-effect modeling was used to determine the best pharmacostatistical model for the data. A one-compartment open model with first-order absorption and elimination was used as the structural pharmacokinetic model.

Dapsone, administered at various doses and schedules, has been proven to be a safe and effective alternative to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for prevention of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Dapsone is also recommended by the Centers for Disease Control for PCP prophylaxis in HIV-infected children. However, the suggested dosage regimen is based upon clinical experience with children with leprosy and dermatitis herpetiformis rather than pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data obtained from the target patient population.
