The current move towards digital pathology enables pathologists to use artificial intelligence (AI)-based computer programmes for the advanced analysis of whole slide images. Impact of tooth mineral tissues genes on dental caries: A birth-cohort study.

Objective: We aimed to investigate whether Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms present in the genes of tooth mineral tissues influence dental caries trajectory across the life course, and if there is an epistatic (gene-gene) interaction between these SNPs.

Methods: A representative sample of all 5,914 births from the 1982 Pelotas birth cohort study was prospectively investigated. Dental caries trajectory across the life course was assessed at 15(n = 888), 24(n = 720), and 31 years old(n = 539).

Pharmacological Modulation by Low Molecular Weight Heparin of Purinergic Signaling in Cardiac Cells Prevents Arrhythmia and Lethality Induced by Myocardial Infarction.

Perioperative challenges following management of spontaneous hepatic rupture in a parturient with severe pre-eclampsia - A case report.

Spontaneous hepatic rupture in pregnancy (SHRP) is a rare but often fatal condition associated with pre-eclampsia or HELLP (haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome. SHRP is linked to significant maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, and maternal complications can extend past the initial intraoperative period. This case report describes the challenging perioperative course of a 35-year-old woman with SHRP.

Development, characterization and antimicrobial activity of multilayer silica nanoparticles with chlorhexidine incorporated into dental composites.

Objective: In this study a dentistry nanocomposite with prolonged antibacterial activity using silica nanoparticles (SNPs) loaded with chlorhexidine (CHX) was developed.

Methods: SNPs were coated with the Layer-by-Layer technique. Dental composites were prepared with organic matrix of BisGMA/TEGDMA and SNPs with or without CHX (0, 10, 20 or 30% w/w).

Here, we have evaluated the effect of natural concentrations of organic extracts (dichloromethane-DI; ethyl acetate-EA and methanol-ME, and three isolated fractions) and mineralized tissues of as chemical and physical resistance, respectively, against the sea urchin through experimental laboratory feeding bioassays. Fatty acids (FA), glycolipids (GLY), phlorotannins (PH) and hydrocarbons (HC) were also characterized and/or quantified in extracts and fractions from using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gas chromatography (GC) coupled to mass spectrometry (CG/MS) or GC coupled to flame ionization detector (FID) and chemical analysis.

In 2021, our research group published the prominent anticancer activity achieved through the successful combination of two redox centres (-quinone/-quinone or quinone/selenium-containing triazole) through a copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The combination of two naphthoquinoidal substrates towards a synergetic product was indicated, but not fully explored. Herein, we report the synthesis of 15 new quinone-based derivatives prepared from click chemistry reactions and their subsequent evaluation against nine cancer cell lines and the murine fibroblast line L929.

Β-glucans and MOS, essential oil, and probiotics in diets of broilers challenged with Eimeria spp. and Clostridium perfringens.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of β-glucans and MOS, essential oil (mixture of carvacrol and thymol), and the probiotic based on Saccharomyces boulardi, as an alternative to anticoccidial agents. In this experiment, six hundred seventy-two 1-day-old male broiler chicks were housed in batteries for 28 d. The experimental design of 4 randomized blocks with 24 cages each, and 7 birds per cage, consisted of an initial phase from 1 to 14 d of age, and a growth phase, from 15 to 28 d of age.

A Case Report on Metamizole-Induced Agranulocytosis: Is the Benefit Worth the Risk?

Metamizole is a drug with analgesic and antipyretic properties widely available in Portugal. Its use is highly controversial because of the risk of agranulocytosis, a rare but serious adverse event. A 70-year-old female patient with a recent history of treatment with metamizole for post-surgery fever and pain presented to the ED with sustained fever, diarrhea, and painful mouth ulcers.

Periodontal Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in early childhood: A case report of loss of deciduous teeth.

The aim of the present study is to report a case of periodontal Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (pEDS) in early childhood. A 3-year-old child, complaining of severe tooth mobility, gingival bleeding, and early loss of deciduous teeth sought the dental clinics. The patient was diagnosed with pEDS, and no other systematic health impairments were diagnosed.

Objective: Compare the neonatal outcomes of two protocols of diagnosis and surveillance of pregnancies complicated by early-onset FGR in a tertiary hospital.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of pregnant women diagnosed with early-onset FGR between 2017 and 2020. We compared the obstetric and perinatal outcomes between two different management protocols (before and after 2019).

Can Acupuncture Improve the Flexibility of Hamstring Muscles? A Randomized, Blinded, and Controlled Pilot Study.

Acupuncture, a therapeutic tool of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), may play a role in both treatment and prevention by improving muscle strength, microcirculation, and reducing muscle soreness. The primary objective of this pilot study was to examine the immediate effects of acupuncture on hamstring muscle stretching and on the pain or discomfort reported during stretching.

The Canine Pancreatic Extracellular Matrix in Diabetes Mellitus and Pancreatitis: Its Essential Role and Therapeutic Perspective.

Diabetes mellitus and pancreatitis are common pancreatic diseases in dogs, affecting the endocrine and exocrine portions of the organ. Dogs have a significant role in the history of research related to genetic diseases, being considered potential models for the study of human diseases. This review discusses the importance of using the extracellular matrix of the canine pancreas as a model for the study of diabetes mellitus and pancreatitis, in addition to focusing on the importance of using extracellular matrix in new regenerative techniques, such as decellularization and recellularization.

"It's not all about the disease": do treatment and socioeconomic status affect perceived impact and satisfaction of patients treated for cutaneous leishmaniasis?

Background: This cross-sectional study compared the general impact of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and patient satisfaction with treatment and health services as perceived by those undergoing different therapeutic regimens in an endemic region in South-Eastern Brazil. We also investigated the factors associated with both outcomes (general impact and satisfaction).

Methods: We included 84 patients with CL treated between 2018 and 2019 with intravenous meglumine antimoniate, liposomal amphotericin B, or intralesional meglumine antimoniate therapy.

One of the essential issues in modern advanced materials science is to design and manufacture flexible devices, in particular in the framework of the Internet of Things (IoT), to improve integration into applications. Naphthenic acids (NAs) are naturally occurring organic acids in petroleum and are found in waste waters generated during oil production (produced water, PW). Profiling this class of compounds is important due to flow assurance during oil exploration. Compositional analysis of PW is also relevant for waste treatment to reduce negative impacts on the environment.
