Methods: Electoral wards were classified as to whether they included estuarine, coastal or only inland features. Rates of different adult and childhood leukaemias were computed for each ward category; that is, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) aged 0-79 and for all childhood leukaemias combined (aged 0-14).

Patients And Methods: : Cases of extranodal NHL were reported to a specialist population-based registry covering neoplastic hematological conditions in parts of England and Wales from 1986 to 1993.
Results: Nearly one third of all NHL, 3556 cases, were extranodal in origin giving a world standardised incidence rate of 1.
We previously reported that 2 polymorphisms in the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene at positions C677T and A1298C were associated with lower risk of adult acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). In the present study, we have examined whether polymorphisms in other folate-metabolizing genes play a role in ALL susceptibility. Polymorphisms in methionine synthase (MS A2756G), cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT1 C1420T), and a double (2R2R) or triple (3R3R) 28-bp tandem repeat in the promoter region of thymidylate synthase (TS) were studied and found to modulate ALL risk.

We report a cytogenetic subgroup of acute myeloid leukaemia whose incidence is independent of age. This observation indicates that acute myeloid leukaemia can develop via multiple pathways, and underlines the importance of cytogenetics in understanding this disease.

Cytogenetically-defined subgroups of acute myeloid leukaemia have distinct biologies, clinical features and outcomes. Evidence from therapy-related leukaemia suggests that chromosomal abnormalities are also markers of exposure. Our results suggest that the smoking-associated risk for acute myeloid leukaemia is restricted to the t(8;21)(q22;q22) subgroup.

Objective: To validate the use of temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy applied to the soft palate in a multicenter setting for reduction of snoring in a minimally morbid manner.
Methods: Prospective, nonrandomized multicenter study of 113 patients who had a respiratory disturbance index less than 15 and minimum oxygen saturation not less than 85% and who were seeking treatment for habitual disruptive snoring. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) detoxify potentially mutagenic and toxic DNA-reactive electrophiles, including metabolites of several chemotherapeutic agents, some of which are suspected human carcinogens. Functional polymorphisms exist in at least three genes that encode GSTs, including GSTM1, GSTT1, and GSTP1. We hypothesize, therefore, that polymorphisms in genes that encode GSTs alter susceptibility to chemotherapy-induced carcinogenesis, specifically to therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia (t-AML), a devastating complication of long-term cancer survival.

A cysteine-to-threonine (C --> T) substitution polymorphism at nucleotide 609 of the NQO1 complementary DNA (NQO1 C609T) results in a lowering of NQO1 activity. Individuals homozygous for this mutation have no NQO1 activity, and heterozygotes have low to intermediate activity compared with people with wild type.

Study Design: Twenty patients with complaints of loud snoring and a respiratory disturbance index no greater than 15 respiratory events per hour with sleep-related episodes of oxygen desaturation no lower than 80% were offered an experimental treatment. Ten were treated with somnoplasty, and a comparison group of 10 matched patients used an oral appliance.
