Article Synopsis
  • Optimizations in immunotherapy for Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) show promise, particularly in targeting galectin-9 (Gal-9) after radiotherapy.
  • In TNBC patients receiving neoadjuvant radiotherapy, higher Gal-9 levels were observed in non-responders compared to baseline, indicating a potential link between Gal-9 expression and treatment response.
  • A study in mice showed that targeting Gal-9 with an antibody led to reduced tumor growth only in those injected with irradiated cancer cells, suggesting Gal-9's potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target in TNBC.

Background: Despite major therapeutic advances, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) still presents a worth prognosis than hormone receptors-positive breast cancers. One major issue relies in the molecular and mutational heterogeneity of TNBC subtypes that is reinforced by the absence of reliable tumor-antigen that could serve as a specific target to further promote efficient tumor cell recognition and depletion. CD160 is a receptor mainly expressed by NK lymphocytes and presenting two isoforms, namely the GPI-anchored form (CD160-GPI) and the transmembrane isoform (CD160-TM).

Background: Sexually polymorphic cognition (SPC) results from the interaction between biological (birth-assigned sex (BAS), sex hormones) and socio-cultural (gender identity, gender roles, sexual orientation) factors. The literature remains quite mixed regarding the magnitude of the effects of these variables. This project used a battery of classic cognitive tests designed to assess the influence of sex hormones on cognitive performance.

Sex/gender differences in cognitive sciences are riddled by conflicting perspectives. At the center of debates are clinical, social, and political perspectives. Front and center, evolutionary and biological perspectives have often focused on 'nature' arguments, while feminist and constructivist views have often focused on 'nurture arguments regarding cognitive sex differences.

Bladder cancer (BC) presenting with pelvic and retroperitoneal lymph nodes presents a therapeutic challenge. The impact of chemoradiotherapy on pelvic and retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis as a consolidation treatment has not been established. Between 2009 and 2020, 502 patients who were treated with first-line chemotherapy for BC in our center, were retrospectively identified.

Article Synopsis
  • - Patients with oligometastatic prostate cancer (having up to 5 metastases) generally have a better prognosis than those with more extensive disease, making this a crucial area for treatment investigation.
  • - The study investigates whether combining stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) with the immune checkpoint inhibitor durvalumab can improve progression-free survival in these patients compared to SBRT alone.
  • - This multicenter phase II trial will evaluate various outcomes, including quality of life and immune response, by enrolling 96 participants over three years, aiming to provide insights into better treatment strategies for prostate cancer.

Cardiovascular diseases are leading causes of mortality and morbidity in adults worldwide. Multiple studies suggest that there are clinically relevant sex differences in cardiovascular disease. Women and men differ substantially in terms of prevalence, presentation, management, and outcomes of cardiovascular disease.

Cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) share common risk factors such as dyslipidemia, obesity and inflammation. However, the role of pro-atherogenic environment and its associated low-grade inflammation in tumor progression remains underexplored. Here we show that feeding C57BL/6J mice with a non-obesogenic high fat high cholesterol diet (HFHCD) for two weeks to induce mild dyslipidemia, increases the pool of circulating Ly6C monocytes available for initial melanoma development, in an IL-1β-dependent manner.

The production and trade of objects manufactured from the skeletal axis of coralid precious corals is a historically, culturally and economically important global industry. Coralids are members of the diverse Coralliidae family, which contains several species complexes and morphospecies. For most precious coral found in the jewelry trade, the color remains the sole clue and link to the taxonomic identity of the individual.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the 2016 Canadian cardiovascular society guidelines for the management of dyslipidemia. More specifically, we assessed the use of 1) alternate lipid targets when triglyceride (TG) levels are high; and 2) nonfasting lipid testing.

Methods: Lipid profiles and pharmacy data were obtained from patients with a history of myocardial infarction and from patients ≥40 years of age with a diagnosis of diabetes.

Background: Choline positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is a new imaging technique for the detection of oligometastatic (OM) prostate cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes after initial OM diagnoses; treatment, particularly metastasis-directed therapy (MDT); and determine risk groups.

Patients And Methods: This multi-center, retrospective study included patients with hormone-sensitive biological relapse after local treatment with curative intent and with fewer than six choline PET/CT metastases.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the retentive strength of zirconium oxide (yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP)) crown-copings treated by combined mechanical and chemical treatments and cemented by four types of self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) to human prepared teeth, before and after six months of aging in water and thermocycling. A total of 120 molar teeth were mounted, prepared using a standardized protocol and digitally scanned, and Y-TZP copings were produced. Teeth were randomly assigned to four SARC groups.

Pneumococcal meningitis produces several inflammatory disorders in susceptible subjects. A worsening of meningitis can occur on the fourth day of evolution in relation with the withdrawal of steroids. Other complications include the development of inflammatory signs in the post-acute stage of infection associated with disseminated vasculitis of the cerebral blood vessels and, even later, an autoimmune chronic meningitis.

Shock states are the leading causes of intensive care admission and are nowadays associated with high morbidity and mortality. They are driven by a complex physiopathology and most frequently a multifactorial mechanism. They can be separated in whether a decrease of oxygen delivery (quantitative shock) or an abnormal cell distribution of cardiac output (distributive shock).

Background: Patients with Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) have a five years survival of less than 5%, but the response to chemotherapy with alkylating agents can vary depending on the methylation status of O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MGMT). Genetic testing has limitations for routine use, while immunohistochemistry (IHC) offers a fast and affordable technique but with heterogeneous results in the literature.

Aim: To evaluate MGMT expression by IHC in tumor tissue of Chilean patients with GBM.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy (PRES) is a condition characterized by T2 and FLAIR hyperintensities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, localized preferentially in the occipital-parietal white matter regions. Pathological MRI images located in midbrain, pons, medulla and spinal cord, that could be asymptomatic, were recently included in this entity. These images are interpreted as vasogenic edema, which is caused by arterial hypertension or eclampsia, neurotoxicity related to immunosuppressive agents or chemotherapy, among other causes.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study focuses on the role of activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM/CD166) in the migration of these HTLV-1-infected lymphocytes across the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
  • * Findings reveal that ALCAM is overexpressed on HTLV-1-infected lymphocytes due to the viral protein Tax, and blocking ALCAM reduces their ability to cross the BBB, suggesting its significance in the disease's progression.
