Global warming is expected to cause hotter, drier summers and more extreme weather events including heat waves and droughts. A little understood aspect of this is its effects on the efficacy of fertilisers and related nutrient losses into the environment. We explored the effects of high soil temperature (>25 °C) and low soil moisture (<40% water filled pore space; WFPS) on emissions of ammonia (NH) and nitrous oxide (NO) following application of urea to soil and the efficacy of urease inhibitors (UI) in slowing N losses.

This research aims to explore whether there is a health disparity between homeowners and renters affected by the indoor air quality of their dwellings. By proxying the presence of mold and smoke as conjoint facilitators of poor indoor air quality, we design a mediation model that previously has not been explored empirically. The structural path model in this study shows that there is indeed a disparity in health between homeowners and renters by demography, socioeconomic status, and dwelling condition.

Background: Stress fractures are a common and potentially debilitating overuse injury to bone and occur frequently among military recruits and athletes. Recovery from a lower body stress fracture typically requires several weeks of physical rehabilitation. Teriparatide, a recombinant form of the bioactive portion of parathyroid hormone (1-34 amino acids), is used to treat osteoporosis, prevent osteoporotic fractures, and enhance fracture healing due to its net anabolic effect on bone.

Residential environments could be associated with the mental health of residents, in general, and during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, limited studies have investigated the relationship between these two. This study used data from the Household Pulse Survey, collected between 23 April 2020 and 23 November 2020 to explore the relationship between mental health status as perceived by the residents and housing tenure (own or rent), building type, and the number of household members, while accounting for sociodemographic characteristics, general health-related variables, and week-specific unobserved heterogeneities.

Manure amendment has been shown to effectively prevent red soil (Ferralic Cambisol) acidification from chemical nitrogen (N) fertilization. However, information is lacking on how much manure is needed to mitigate acidification and maintain soil productivity while preventing accumulation of other nutrients and heavy metals from long-term inputs. This study determined the effects of various combinations of manure with urea-N on acidification and changes in soil P, K, and heavy metals in a 9-year maize field experiment in southern China.

Biogas slurry is widely used as a crop fertilizer due to its available nitrogen content. However, it remains unclear how biogas slurry application affects soil organic carbon (SOC) status and soil microbial community under typical agricultural systems. Here, under a wheat-rice field experiment, we examined the responses of SOC and soil bacterial and fungal communities to biogas slurry application, both with (BSS) and without (BS) straw return, relative to chemical nitrogen fertilizer with (CFS) and without (CF) straw return.

The application of biogas slurry, from anaerobic digestion of livestock excreta, to cropland has proven to be an effective mechanism for recycling nutrients within farms. However, the potential pollution of heavy metals from repeated biogas slurry fertilization has not received much attention. Here we present the results of a field experiment under rice-wheat rotation demonstrating the accumulation, speciation distribution and plant uptake of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd) in soil following biogas slurry application.

Inhibitors of urease and ammonia monooxygenase can limit the rate of conversion of urea to ammonia and ammonia to nitrate, respectively, potentially improving N fertilizer use efficiency and reducing gaseous losses. Winter wheat grown on a sandy soil in the UK was treated with urea fertilizer with the urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) or a combination of both. The effects on soil microbial community diversity, the abundance of genes involved in nitrification and crop yields and net N recovery were compared.

Article Synopsis
  • Liming effectively reduces soil acidity and enhances pH levels for agricultural use, but the ability of models to predict this is still being studied.
  • Long-term data from Rothamsted Research revealed that the VSD+ model accurately simulates changes in soil pH and base saturation due to fertilization and liming, except when sulfur was added.
  • The study highlighted that nitrogen transformations contribute significantly to soil acidity in grasslands, while in arable land, base cation uptake primarily drives acidification, demonstrating the model’s effectiveness in assessing the impacts of liming on soil health.

There is currently much debate around the environmental implications of ruminant farming and a need for robust data on nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) fluxes from beef and sheep grazing systems. Here we use data collected from the North Wyke Farm Platform along with the SPACSYS model to examine the N and C budgets and the N use efficiency (NUE) of grassland swards at different stages of establishment. We assessed the transition from permanent pasture (PP) to a high-sugar grass (HSG), and a mixed sward of HSG with white clover (HSGC), identifying data specifically for the reseed (RS) years and the first year following RS (HSG-T and HSGC-T).
