Introduction: Traumatic diaphragmatic rupture is a rare injury in the severely injured patient and is most commonly caused by blunt mechanisms. However, penetrating mechanisms can also dominate depending on regional and local factors. Traumatic diaphragmatic rupture is difficult to diagnose and can be missed by primary diagnostic procedures in the resuscitation room.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the relationship between postoperative physical strain and the risk of developing incisional hernias after laparoscopic or open abdominal surgery, questioning the common belief that early strain increases this risk.
  • - Involving 393 patients, the findings show that the incidence of hernias was significantly higher in those undergoing laparotomy compared to laparoscopy, with younger males more likely to experience these hernias.
  • - Results indicate that early physical activity post-surgery did not contribute to incisional hernias, highlighting the need for further research to potentially encourage a quicker return to normal activity for patients.

Background: In Germany as elsewhere, standardized recommendations are lacking on the avoidance of physical exertion to protect the abdom - inal wall in patients who have recently undergone abdominal surgery. It is unclear how much stress the abdominal wall can withstand and how long the patient should be exempted from work. The goal of this review is to determine whether there are any standardized, evidence-based recommendations for postoperative care from which valid recommendations for Germany can be derived.

The optical properties of quantum dots embedded in a catalytically grown semiconductor nanowire are studied theoretically. In comparison to dots in a bulk environment, the excitonic absorption is strongly modified by the one-dimensional character of the nanowire phonon spectrum. In addition to pronounced satellite peaks due to phonon-assisted absorption, we find a finite width of the zero-phonon line already in the lowest-order calculation.

Background: The German cost-of-illness study of stroke is a multicenter study in 6 departments of internal medicine, 9 departments of general neurology and 15 departments of neurology with an acute stroke unit. The aims of this study are to describe the management patterns, cost of treatment and overall resource utilization after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) as well as the major differences to ischemic stroke (IS).

Methods: During a 12-month period, 30 participating centers with a special interest in stroke prospectively included 586 patients with ICH which were collected in a joint data bank.
