Previous epidemiological studies have suggested that green tea catechins, including Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant polyphenol in green tea, may be associated with reduced serum folate levels. This is of particular interest as women of childbearing age may be consuming EGCG from tea, dietary supplements, or involved in active clinical trials studying EGCG or green tea extract. EGCG was reported to shrink uterine fibroids in preclinical and clinical studies.

Background: Electronic health records (EHRs) have been associated with information overload, causing providers to miss critical information, make errors, and delay care. Information overload can be especially prevalent in medical intensive care units (ICUs) where patients are often critically ill and their charts contain large amounts of data points such as vitals, test and laboratory results, medications, and notes.

Objective: We propose to study the relationship between information overload and EHR use among medical ICU providers in 4 major United States medical centers.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the feasibility of using wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to detect and differentiate between human and avian strains of Influenza A viruses (IAVs) across Northern Ireland.
  • - Between August and December 2022, wastewater samples from six treatment facilities revealed a constant presence of IAVs, with varied proportions of human and avian strains, though no strong correlation was found with clinical IAV data from the region.
  • - The findings suggest that WBE can effectively monitor circulating IAV strains, offering a valuable approach for ongoing surveillance and potential prevention of influenza outbreaks through genetic analysis.

  • The study aimed to analyze the racial and ethnic representation in the most cited reproductive endocrinology and infertility research, comparing it to other obstetrics and gynecology subspecialties: gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, and maternal-fetal medicine.
  • It found that reproductive endocrinology research had the highest percentage of White patients (80.5%) and the lowest for Hispanic patients (4.9%), while urogynecology studies had the fewest Black patients (6.6%).
  • The research noted that gynecologic oncology had significant missing data on race (19.3%) and that randomized controlled trials also showed a higher percentage of White patients and a lower representation of Hispanic patients than expected based on US

  • The androgen receptor (AR) is important for prostate cell differentiation, but its role changes in cancer, leading to enhanced tumor traits due to altered chromatin interactions.
  • This study reveals that the NSD2 enzyme, which is overexpressed in prostate cancer, is crucial for the function of tumor-specific AR enhancers by affecting their chromatin makeup.
  • Targeting both NSD1 and NSD2 may provide an effective treatment strategy for advanced prostate cancer, especially seen with a specialized degrader that shows strong effects in AR-driven cancer models.

Background: Children treated for cancer are at risk for adverse effects of iron due to transfusions administered during prolonged marrow suppression, which may increase exposure to toxic forms of iron, extrahepatic iron accumulation, and long-term organ damage.

Objective: This study aimed to characterize the severity and organ distribution of clinically significant, multisystem iron overload (IO) in an at-risk cohort of pediatric cancer patients.

Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study of childhood cancer patients who underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to clinical concern for IO.

Chronically transfused patients with sickle cell disease typically do not exhibit iron-mediated extrahepatic toxicity. However, we demonstrate that the pituitary gland is vulnerable to iron deposition, and it occurs regardless of other extrahepatic involvement. Severe pituitary siderosis is associated with early organ dysfunction.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes severe infections in infants, immunocompromised or elderly individuals resulting in annual epidemics of respiratory disease. Currently, limited clinical surveillance and the lack of predictable seasonal dynamics limit the public health response. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has recently been used globally as a key metric in determining prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in the community, but its application to other respiratory viruses is limited.
