Phosphatidylglycerol determination has been used as an additional parameter in the evaluation of fetal lung maturity. Meconium was added to aliquot samples of amniotic fluid after phosphatidylglycerol determination. On those amniotic fluid samples without phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol standard and meconium were added.

We have examined the effects of PRL-producing ectopic pituitary grafts on plasma FSH and LH levels in male golden hamsters with anterior (AHD) and anteolateral hypothalamic deafferentation (ALHD). After hypothalamic deafferentation or sham deafferentation, hamsters received pituitary transplants under the kidney capsule. In the first experiment, the animals were unilaterally nephrectomized 5-6 weeks after transplantation to remove the ectopic pituitaries.

We have previously reported that homologous plasma inhibits the accumulation of [3H]norepinephrine ( [3H]NE) by the canine saphenous vein. The purpose of this study was to extract the inhibitory substance(s) from plasma and to examine some of its properties. The net accumulation of tritium by saphenous vein strips following incubations in [3H]NE was inhibited 34.

This study was designed to examine the role of catecholamines and serotonin in the regulation of estrogen receptors (ER) in the medial basal hypothalamus (MBH) and anterior pituitary gland (AP) of adult ovariectomized rats. Plasma PRL and LH were also determined. Injection of alpha-methyl tyrosine (alpha-MT) resulted in the significant reduction of norepinephrine and dopamine (DA) content in the MBH, and of plasma LH levels as well as in the significant elevation of plasma PRL levels.

Male rats were fed an 8% low protein diet for 30 consecutive days beginning at 20 days of age. On day 50, the effect of the diet was evaluated on the hypophyseal-adrenal axis and the observations compared with those noted in age-matched controls fed a standard laboratory diet. The malnourished animals had significantly larger adrenal gland weights, relative to body size, and higher levels of serum corticosterone.

This study was designed to investigate the effect of anterolateral hypothalamic deafferentiation (ALHD) and medial preoptic area (MPOA) lesions on plasma LH levels in the long term ovariectomized rat. The deafferentations were carried out with a Halasz-Pupp knife (radius of 1.5 mm and height of 2.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of limbic forebrain lesions in conjunction with unilateral ovariectomy (ULO) on compensatory ovulation. At metoestrus, cyclic rats were ULO and bilateral brain lesions were placed in either the cerebral cortex (CTX), dorsal hippocampus (DHPC), amygdaloid nucleus (ACO) or stria terminalis (ST). In addition, two control groups consisted of intact and ULO only rats.

Studies conducted in several laboratories have shown primate glucocorticoid secretion to occur episodically. In light of the methodological, as well as physiological importance of this finding, the present study was undertaken to determine whether the rat corticosteroid secretion also occurs episodically. Female rats were outfitted with chronic intravenous cannulas, and 1 week later 200 units of heparin were injected through the implanted cannula and blood samples (0.

We describe the use of radical craniofacial osteotomies, to improve the correction of exorbitism and to obtain better esthetic results in children with Crouzon's syndrome. We suggest some minor modifications to improve the fixation and the mechanical stability of the mobilized segments of the skull. Our procedure consists, essentially, of advancement of both orbits and the midface in one piece, plus advancement and reshaping of the frontal area.

Myocardial scans obtained by injecting radioactive 201thallium during exercise were correlated with electrocardiograms obtained at rest and during exercise, with coronary arteriographic abnormalities, and with left ventriculograms in 55 patients suspected of having coronary arterial disease. Thirty-nine patients had significant coronary arterial disease, 34 of whom had abnormal myocardial scans after exercise and 21 of whom had abnormal ECGs during exercise. The myocardial scan after exercise was most frequently abnormal in the presence of significant abnormalities in the Q wave or localized left ventricular asynergy and when ST-segment depression persisted for longer than ten minutes after exercise.

Systemic thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and corticosterone (B) levels were measured in serial plasma samples withdrawn from 8 adult female rats before and for several weeks after anterior hypothalamic cuts (FC), made with a modified Halász knife (1.5 mm radius). With lights on from 5:00 to 19:00 h the rats were bled by rapid venipuncture at 9:00 and 20:00 h 14 days before and 5 days after FC and by chronic intra-atrial cannulas at 9:00, 13:00, 17:00 and 20:00 h on days 25, 30 and 40 or 50 post-FC.

The roles played by the amygdala and hippocampus in controlling the release of pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH) were studied in the freely moving rat. Monopolar stainless steel electrodes were implanted into the corticomedial (CM) amygdala, basolateral (BL) amygdala and dorsal hippocampus of female rats. When the animal had recovered from surgery and shown two consecutive 4-day estrous cycles, a chronic atrial cannula was introduced during the afternoon of diestrus II.

Non--stress levels of plasma melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) and corticosterone were determined at 3-h intervals during controlled light--dark cycles in adult, male rats. Significant 24-h periodicity was demonstrated for both plasma MSH and corticosterone. Whereas plasma MSH values were not as high during the early evening hours as during the early morning hours, plasma corticosterone levels showed a marked rise during the early afternoon and crest values occurred just before the lights off phase of the 24-h light--dark cycle.
