Memorials extend beyond their physical constructs, embodying political narratives and influencing collective memory. This study examines how traditional memorials and counter-memorials shape geopolitical storytelling and public sentiment. Through text analysis of over 158,000 online reviews, we compare emotional responses elicited by these memorial types.

Assessing the environmental risks of contaminated groundwater presents significant challenges due to its often-complex chemical composition and to dynamic processes affecting exposure of organisms in receiving surface waters. The objective of this study was to characterize the effects of groundwater collected from a legacy contaminated industrial site, in fish under environmentally relevant conditions. A 21-day fish short-term reproduction assay was conducted in outdoor wetland mesocosms by exposing adult fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) to graded concentrations of groundwater (1 %, 3 %, and 6 %).

Background: Over fifty percent of individuals with overweight and obesity are emotional eaters. Emotional eating can be theorized as a conditioned response to eat for reasons that are not associated with physiological hunger. We conducted this proof-of-concept study to gather evidence that a mobile app that delivers a common non-meditative mindfulness exercise called RAIN, in a step-by-step image sequence can improve emotional eating and other outcomes over a 3-week period.

This article is a response to the insightful pieces written about my beginning attempt of defining and elaborating on a cultural political psychology (Carriere, 2022), of which there were four - Beckstead and Jordan (2023); Busch-Jensen and Røn-Larsen (2023); Mazur (2023a); and Rutherford (2023). Their commentaries were varied in their expansions and thoughts on the work, and each provided a unique perspective on the future of a cultural political psychology. Here, I expand on the points made by each of the authors and synthesize their expansions to look forward to further theoretical elaborations within a cultural political psychology.

Policies aimed at limiting border crossing and influencing other cultural values have been enacted domestically and internationally in the name of security. However, do these decisions concerning such tradeoffs resonate equally across all groups? In two studies, we probe the moderating impact of intergroup threat on the inclination to restrict human rights. In Study 1, we employ a unique economic tradeoff model to directly compare the value of security with the rights of either citizens or non-citizens.

Objectives: Previous mindful eating scales stress the attentional domains of eating-specific mindfulness, such as present-moment attention to homeostatic cues of hunger and satiety while discounting other important domains such as non-judgment and decentering. The purpose of the series of studies was to develop and evaluate a multifaceted mindful eating scale that assesses several domains of eating-specific mindfulness.

Methods: A multistep process was used to construct the Four Facet Mindful Eating Scale (FFaMES).

This study sought to evaluate the association between newly-developed significant hypercholesterolemia within one year following living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) and long term outcomes in light of cardiovascular events and graft failure. From October 2003 to July 2017, 877 LDLT recipients were stratified according to development of significant hypercholesterolemia within one year following LDLT. The primary outcome was occurrence of a major adverse cardiac event (MACE), defined as a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, and coronary revascularization after LDLT.

Although both pre- and postoperative myocardial injuries are strongly associated with an increased postoperative mortality, no study has directly compared the effects of pre- and postoperative myocardial injuries on 30-day mortality after non-cardiac surgery. Therefore, we evaluated and compared the effects of pre- and postoperative myocardial injury on 30-day mortality after non-cardiac surgery. From January 2010 to December 2016, patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery were stratified into either the normal (n = 3182), preoperative myocardial injury (n = 694), or postoperative myocardial injury (n = 756) groups according to the peak cardiac troponin value.

Background: Studies of mechanically ventilated patients with a low risk of reintubation have suggested that the use of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy reduces the risk of reintubation compared with conventional oxygen therapy (COT). However, the effect of HFNC following extubation in elderly patients with a high risk of reintubation remains unclear.

Methods: All consecutive medical intensive care unit (ICU) patients aged >65 years who were mechanically ventilated for >24 h were prospectively registered between July 2017 and June 2018.

Background: Significant aortic regurgitation (AR) is sometimes accompanied by regional wall motion abnormalities (RWMA) during exercise stress echocardiography. The aim of this study was to estimate the association between RWMA after exercise and in the presence of significant AR in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) or volume overload and to predict the eventual need for aortic valve replacement (AVR).

Methods And Results: We retrospectively reviewed 182 patients with significant AR who underwent exercise echocardiography.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the long-term effects of prophylactic tricuspid annuloplasty (TAP) in patients with mild tricuspid regurgitation (TR) after mitral valve repair.
  • A total of 151 patients were analyzed, divided into TAP and no TAP groups, with follow-up averaging over 9 years; statistical adjustments were made for baseline differences.
  • Results indicated no significant differences in survival, cardiac-related mortality, or TR progression between the two groups, suggesting that TAP may not offer additional benefits in this context.

A surprisingly small body of research in psychology documents the costs and benefits of labor unions on an individual's psyche. However, the importance of labor unions - so critical it was codified in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights - requires a renewed examination of labor movements beyond the individual differences that predict labor membership. I review the body of evidence that shows labor has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on the workplace and have begun to use social movement actions of growing support and building power.
