Efficacy of an Intervention to Teach Zippering: A Two-Group Control Study.

Importance: Engaging and pulling up a zipper is a functional skill needed by young children.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of a standard zippering teaching vest presented with general verbal prompts to a modified zippering teaching vest presented with a related story and vocabulary among typically developing preschoolers.

Design: An experimental, two-group, pre-post design.

Utility of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration in the diagnosis and staging of colorectal carcinoma.

The objective of this study is to assess the utility of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) in the diagnosis and staging of colorectal cancer. The study includes patients who underwent EUS-FNA at our institution for staging of colorectal carcinoma or for evaluation peri-rectal masses or distal metastases from August 2000 to November 2010. We assessed the frequency with which EUS-FNA procedure confirms the diagnosis of malignancy and the percent of cases in which it modifies staging of colorectal carcinoma.

Diagnosis of metastatic fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration.

The fibrolamellar variant of hepatocellular carcinoma (FL-HCC) is distinguished from other hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) by its unique clinical and pathologic features. Cytological features for this tumor on fine needle aspiration (FNA) of primary tumors have been described earlier. We present here a unique case of metastatic FL-HCC diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) of mediastinal adenopathy.

Bradycardia and syncope as a presentation of cardiac allograft rejection involving the conducting system.

Post-heart transplantation bradycardic syncope and arrest could be due to preferential rejection of the conduction system. We present six heart transplant patients with this presentation, two of whom died. The autopsy of one of those patients demonstrated severe rejection of the conduction system, with only mild rejection throughout the rest of the myocardium.

Angiomyolipoma of the anterior mediastinum.

Angiomyolipoma is a benign tumor composed of varying proportions of smooth muscle cells, blood vessels, and adipose tissue that most commonly occurs in the kidney. Sporadic lesions and lesions arising in the setting of the tuberous sclerosis complex have been reported in extrarenal sites. We present the case of an incidentally discovered angiomyolipoma in the anterior mediastinum.

Evaluation of the LIAISON chemiluminescence immunoassay for diagnosis of syphilis.

We report the results of an evaluation of the LIAISON Treponema pallidum-specific assay, a one-step sandwich chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA), as a screening test and as a confirmatory test for the diagnosis of syphilis. The assay was compared with the CAPTIA Syphilis-G enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and with a testing algorithm that also included the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) and T. pallidum particle agglutination (PA) assays.
