Introduction: The aim of this study is to quantify the association of temporary epilation following interventional neuroradiology (INR) procedures and compare the peak skin dose (D) threshold to published values.
Methods: Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a major centre for INR with over 500 primarily interventional procedures performed every year. D is calculated when the reference air kerma (K) exceeds 3 Gy.
Research conducted over the past 15+ years has identified hundreds of common germline genetic variants associated with cancer risk, but understanding the biological impact of these primarily non-protein coding variants has been challenging. The National Cancer Institute sought to better understand and address those challenges by requesting input from the scientific community via a survey and a 2-day virtual meeting, which focused on discussions among participants. Here, we discuss challenges identified through the survey as important to advancing functional analysis of common cancer risk variants: 1) When is a variant truly characterized; 2) Developing and standardizing databases and computational tools; 3) Optimization and implementation of high-throughput assays; 4) Use of model organisms for understanding variant function; 5) Diversity in data and assays; and 6) Creating and improving large multidisciplinary collaborations.

Objectives: This study sought to investigate the prognostic implications of different MVI patterns in STEMI patients.
Methods: The authors analyzed 1,109 STEMI patients included in 3 prospective studies.
Background: The associations between deprivation and illness trajectory after hospitalisation for coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) are uncertain.
Methods: A prospective, multicentre cohort study was conducted on post-COVID-19 patients, enrolled either in-hospital or shortly post-discharge. Two evaluations were carried out: an initial assessment and a follow-up at 28-60 days post-discharge.
BACKGROUND: In patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI), therapies that could further reduce the risk of adverse cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes are needed. METHODS: In this international registry-based, randomized, double-blind trial, patients without prior diabetes or chronic heart failure, presenting with acute MI and impaired left ventricular systolic function, were randomly assigned 10 mg of dapagliflozin or placebo, given once daily. The primary outcome was the hierarchical composite of death, hospitalization for heart failure, nonfatal MI, atrial fibrillation/flutter, type 2 diabetes mellitus, New York Heart Association Functional Classification at the last visit, and body weight decrease of 5% or greater at the last visit using the win ratio analysis method.

The acquired images can be utilised to analyse the spatial extent and severity of myocardial ischaemia (regions with impaired microvascular blood flow). In the present paper, we propose a novel generalisable spatio-temporal hierarchical Bayesian model (GST-HBM) to automate the detection of ischaemic lesions and improve the in silico prediction accuracy by systematically integrating spatio-temporal context information.

Methods: Outpatients referred for coronary computed tomography angiography in 3 hospitals in the United Kingdom were prospectively screened. After coronary computed tomography angiography, patients with unobstructed coronary arteries, and who consented, underwent invasive endotyping.
Background: Standard modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (SMuRFs) are well-established players in the pathogenesis of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, in a significant proportion of STEMI patients, no SMuRFs can be identified, and the outcomes of this subgroup are not well described.
Objectives: To assess the infarct characteristics at myocardial-tissue level and subsequent clinical outcomes in SMuRF-less STEMIs.
Background: We investigated the associations of healthcare worker status with multisystem illness trajectory in hospitalised post-COVID-19 individuals.

Since the late 19th century, the immune system has been known to play a role in cancer risk, initiation, and progression. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified hundreds of genetic risk loci for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, yet the connection between human genetic variation and immune-mediated response to cancer treatments remains less well-explored. Understanding inherited genetic variation, with respect to germline genetic polymorphisms that affect immune system pathways, could lead to greater insights about how these processes may best be harnessed to successfully treat cancer.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAims: Identifying novel mediators of lethal myocardial reperfusion injury that can be targeted during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is key to limiting the progression of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) to heart failure. Here, we show through parallel clinical and integrative preclinical studies the significance of the protease cathepsin-L on cardiac function during reperfusion injury.
Methods And Results: We found that direct cardiac release of cathepsin-L in STEMI patients (n = 76) immediately post-PPCI leads to elevated serum cathepsin-L levels and that serum levels of cathepsin-L in the first 24 h post-reperfusion are associated with reduced cardiac contractile function and increased infarct size.

Background: The goals of this project were to assess the status of NCI's rare cancer-focused population science research managed by the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), to develop a framework for evaluation of rare cancer research activities, and to review available resources to study rare cancers.
Methods: Cancer types with an overall age-adjusted incidence rate of less than 20 cases per 100,000 individuals were identified using NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program data. SEER data were utilized to develop a framework based on statistical commonalities.
Background: Primary percutaneous coronary intervention is used to restore blood flow in the infarct-related coronary artery, followed by immediate stenting to prevent reocclusion. Stents implanted in thrombus-laden arteries cause distal embolization, which paradoxically impairs myocardial reperfusion and ventricular function. Whether a strategy of delayed stenting improves outcomes in patients with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is uncertain.

We aimed to assess their long-term prognostic significance.
Methods: A prospective cohort of unselected patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction with paired acute and 6-month cardiovascular magnetic resonance, with the 5-year composite end point of all-cause death and hospitalization for heart failure was included.
Background: Novel parameters that detect failed microvascular reperfusion might identify better the patients likely to benefit from adjunctive treatments during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Aims: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that a novel invasive parameter, the thermodilution-derived temperature recovery time (TRT), would be associated with microvascular obstruction (MVO) and prognosis.
Methods: TRT was derived and validated in two independent ST-elevation myocardial infarction populations and was measured immediately post PCI.
Inflammation is a normal process in our body; acute inflammation acts to suppress infections and support wound healing. Chronic inflammation likely leads to a wide range of diseases, including cancer. Tools to locate and monitor inflammation are critical for developing effective interventions to arrest inflammation and promote its resolution.
