Bowel cleansing quality evaluation in colon capsule endoscopy: what is the reference standard?

Background: The diagnostic accuracy of colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) depends on a well-cleansed bowel. Evaluating the cleansing quality can be difficult with a substantial interobserver variation.

Objectives: Our primary aim was to establish a standard of agreement for bowel cleansing in CCE based on evaluations by expert readers.

Prospective multicenter study to identify optimal target population for motorized spiral enteroscopy.

Motorized spiral enteroscopy (MSE) enhances small bowel exploration, but the optimal target population for this technique is unknown. We aimed to identify the target population for MSE by evaluating its efficacy and safety, as well as detecting predictors of efficacy. A prospective multicenter observational study was conducted at 9 tertiary hospitals in Spain, enrolling patients between June 2020-2022.

EEG before chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy and early after onset of immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome.

Background: Immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) is common after chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of preinfusion electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities and EEG findings at ICANS onset for predicting ICANS risk and severity in 56 adult patients with refractory lymphoma undergoing CAR-T therapy.

Study Design: EEGs were conducted at the time of lymphodepleting chemotherapy and shortly after onset of ICANS.

A comprehensive examination of small-bowel capsule endoscopy in Spanish centers to meet European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy standards.

In 2019, the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) created a working group to develop technical and quality standards for small-bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) to improve the daily practice of endoscopy services. They developed 10 quality parameters, which have yet to be tested in a real-life setting. Our study aimed to evaluate the accomplishment of the quality standards in SBCE established by the ESGE in several Spanish centers.

Background And Aims: Small-bowel (SB) capsule endoscopy (CE) is a first-line procedure for exploring the SB. Endoscopic GI PlacemenT (EGIPT) of SB CE is sometimes necessary. Although experience with EGIPT is considerable in pediatric populations, we aimed to describe the safety, efficacy, and outcomes of EGIPT of SB CE in adult patients.

Prevalence, comorbidities, and profiles of neurodevelopmental disorders according to the DSM-5-TR in children aged 6 years old in a European region.

Background: There are no studies that measure the prevalence and real comorbidities of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) according to the DSM-5-TR in 6-year-old children in population and clinical samples or studies that measure them as a whole. The data on the prevalence of these disorders are usually disparate because of the estimation methods (direct/indirect), the type of sample (population/clinical/school), and the ages studied.

Methods: The initial sample (289 subjects) was representative of 6-year-old children in the entire population of Menorca, obtained from pediatric primary care services (100% of the sample).

Small-bowel capsule endoscopy and device-assisted enteroscopy for diagnosis and treatment of small-bowel disorders: European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) Guideline - Update 2022.

Almost Perfect Spin Filtering in Graphene-Based Magnetic Tunnel Junctions.

We report on large spin-filtering effects in epitaxial graphene-based spin valves, strongly enhanced in our specific multilayer case. Our results were obtained by the effective association of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) multilayer graphene with a high quality epitaxial Ni(111) ferromagnetic spin source. We highlight that the Ni(111) spin source electrode crystallinity and metallic state are preserved and stabilized by multilayer graphene CVD growth.

Small bowel Crohn's disease: optimal modality for diagnosis and monitoring.

Purpose Of Review: This paper reviews different imaging options for small bowel (SB) Crohn's disease (CD) patients.

Recent Findings: In total, 80% of patients suffering from CD have SB involvement, being the exclusive manifestation in 30% of cases. As the proximal disease is related to poor response to treatment, a higher rate of stenosis and a greater need for surgical treatment, a SB assessment should be performed.

Multi-body-site colonization screening cultures for predicting multi-drug resistant Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteremia in hematological patients.

Background: To investigate the multi-drug resistant bacteria (MDRB) colonization rate in hematological patients hospitalized for any cause using a multi-body-site surveillance approach, and determine the extent to which this screening strategy helped anticipate MDRB bloodstream infections (BSI).

Methods: Single-center retrospective observational study including 361 admissions documented in 250 adult patients. Surveillance cultures of nasal, pharyngeal, axillary and rectal specimens (the latter two combined) were performed at admission and subsequently on a weekly basis.

Predictive factors for inadequate bowel cleansing in colon capsule endoscopy.

Background And Aims: Achieving adequate bowel cleansing is of utmost importance for the efficiency of colon capsule endoscopy (CCE). However, information about predictive factors is lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the predictive factors of poor bowel cleansing in the CCE setting.

Surimi-like protein ingredient from porcine spleen as lean meat replacer in emulsion-type sausages.

The aim of this work was to assess the influence of a porcine spleen surimi-like protein ingredient as pork meat replacer in emulsified cooked meat products (frankfurter-type sausages). The effects of the addition of porcine spleen protein isolate (SPI) in substitution of lean meat at concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% on the physicochemical characteristics, microstructure, textural, and sensorial properties of the sausages were investigated. The addition of SPI did not affect the emulsion stability of raw meat batters nor the proximate composition of the cooked sausages, provided that sausages are formulated considering the differences in protein and fat content between pork meat and spleen protein fraction.

CAR-T therapy in solid transplant recipients with post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease: case report and literature review.

Patients with postransplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) who are refractory to rituximab-based regimens have extremely poor prognosis. Data is lacking in the setting of solid organ transplantation (SOT)-related PTLD treated with chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy. Moreover, limited information is available on the influence of concomitant immunosuppressive drugs on CAR-T function.

Monitoring established Crohn's disease with pan-intestinal video capsule endoscopy in Europe: clinician consultation using the nominal group technique.

Objective: Monitoring established Crohn's disease (CD) through a "treat-to-target" strategy aims to reduce and prevent long-term bowel damage and disability. Despite the availability of different monitoring techniques, there is a current lack of integrated evidence to guide optimal monitoring in terms of appropriate tools and timing. Pan-intestinal video capsule endoscopy (PCE) enables non-invasive and direct visualization of the entire intestinal tract with proven safety and efficacy.

Multiferroics offer an elegant means to implement voltage control and on the fly reconfigurability in microscopic, nanoscaled systems based on ferromagnetic materials. These properties are particularly interesting for the field of magnonics, where spin waves are used to perform advanced logical or analogue functions. Recently, the emergence of nanomagnonics is expected to eventually lead to the large-scale integration of magnonic devices.

Band-Gap Landscape Engineering in Large-Scale 2D Semiconductor van der Waals Heterostructures.

We present a growth process relying on pulsed laser deposition for the elaboration of complex van der Waals heterostructures on large scales, at a 400 °C CMOS-compatible temperature. Illustratively, we define a multilayer quantum well geometry through successive growths, leading to WSe being encapsulated into WS layers. The structural constitution of the quantum well geometry is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy.

Sirolimus versus cyclosporine in haploidentical stem cell transplantation with posttransplant cyclophosphamide and mycophenolate mofetil as graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis.

Sirolimus has emerged as an alternative to calcineurin inhibitors-based (CNI) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. This retrospective study compares the outcome of 133 consecutive adult patients with haematological malignancies undergoing haploidentical stem cell transplantation with posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), combined with cyclosporine A (PTCy-CsA-MMF,  = 67) or sirolimus (PTCy-Sir-MMF,  = 66) as GVHD prophylaxis strategy. The median follow-up was 48 (range 22-83) and 13 (range 3-33) months, respectively.

Pan-enteric capsule for bleeding high-risk patients. Can we limit endoscopies?

Introduction: obscure gastrointestinal bleeding is defined as bleeding from a source that cannot be identified on upper or lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and capsule endoscopy is the next step in these patients. Some patients may be unsuitable for conventional endoscopy and performing a capsule panendoscopic test as a first line procedure might potentially reduce the number of endoscopies and their subsequent risk.

Aim: to analyze our experience with capsule endoscopy in the bleeding setting.

RSM Optimization for the Recovery of Technofunctional Protein Extracts from Porcine Hearts.

Meat byproducts, such as the internal organs from slaughtered animals, are usually underutilized materials with low commercial value. The functional (emulsifying, gelling, and foaming) properties of soluble protein extracts derived from pork hearts were investigated, as well as their molecular weight distribution. A central composite design (CCD) for two process variables (pH and ionic strength of the extraction buffer) was used to foreknow the effects of the process conditions on the physicochemical characteristics and technofunctionality of the protein extracts by means of the response surface methodology (RSM).
