Unravelling the etiology of sporadic late-onset cerebellar ataxia in a cohort of 205 patients: a prospective study.

Background: Despite recent progress in the field of genetics, sporadic late-onset (> 40 years) cerebellar ataxia (SLOCA) etiology remains frequently elusive, while the optimal diagnostic workup still needs to be determined. We aimed to comprehensively describe the causes of SLOCA and to discuss the relevance of the investigations.

Methods: We included 205 consecutive patients with SLOCA seen in our referral center.

Aim: The second consensus statement for the diagnosis of multiple system atrophy type cerebellar (MSA-C) includes pons and middle cerebellar peduncle (MCP) atrophy as MRI features. However, other MRI abnormalities such as MCP hyperintensity, hot cross bun sign (HCB), putaminal hypointensity and hyperintense putaminal rim have been described.

Objectives: To evaluate, in patients with sporadic late-onset cerebellar ataxia (SLOCA), the discriminative value of several MRI features for the diagnosis of MSA-C, to follow their evolution during the course of MSA-C, and to search for correlations between these MRI features and clinical signs.

Innovative non-thermal plasma disinfection process inside sealed bags: Assessment of bactericidal and sporicidal effectiveness in regard to current sterilization norms.

In this work, we developed a device capable to generate a non-thermal plasma discharge inside a sealed bag. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the oxygen, nitrogen and argon plasma sterilization on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis spores according to the NF EN 556 Norm. Moreover the bag integrity which is a critical key to maintain the sterile state of items after the end of the process was verified by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometry (XPS) analyses.

Femoral Torsion: Impact of Femur Position on CT and Stereoradiography Measurements.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate stereoradiographic measurements of femoral torsion with different femoral positions, in comparison with CT measurements, with use of the current standard axial-slice technique. We hypothesize that CT measurements vary with femoral spatial positioning because of the resulting projection onto the CT plane, whereas stereoradiographic measurements, which are derived from a 3D reconstruction of the femur, remain constant.

Dodoneine (Ddn) is one of the active compounds identified from , which is a medicinal plant used in African pharmacopeia and traditional medicine for the treatment of hypertension. In the context of a scientific program aiming at discovering new hypotensive agents through the original combination of natural product discovery and superacid chemistry diversification, and after evidencing dodoneine's vasorelaxant effect on rat aorta, superacid modifications allowed us to generate original analogues which showed selective human carbonic anhydrase III (hCA III) and L-type Ca current inhibition. These derivatives can now be considered as new lead compounds for vasorelaxant therapeutics targeting these two proteins.

Deciphering the causes of sporadic late-onset cerebellar ataxias: a prospective study with implications for diagnostic work.

The management of sporadic late-onset cerebellar ataxias represents a very heterogeneous group of patients and remains a challenge for neurologist in clinical practice. We aimed at describing the different causes of sporadic late-onset cerebellar ataxias that were diagnosed following standardized, exhaustive investigations and the population characteristics according to the aetiologies as well as at evaluating the relevance of these investigations. All patients consecutively referred to our centre due to sporadic, progressive cerebellar ataxia occurring after 40 years of age were included in the prospective, observational study.

Xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group F: A rare cause of cerebellar ataxia with chorea.

The complementation group F of Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP-F) is rare in the Caucasian population, and usually devoid of neurological symptoms. We report two cases, both Caucasian, who exhibited progressive cerebellar ataxia, chorea, a mild subcortical frontal cognitive impairment, and in one case severe polyneuropathy. Brain MRI demonstrated cerebellar (2/2) and cortical (1/2) atrophy.

Endophytic fungi associated with Sudanese medicinal plants show cytotoxic and antibiotic potential.

In this study, we isolated 15 endophytic fungi from five Sudanese medicinal plants. Each fungal endophytic strain was identified by sequencing of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of rDNA. Ethyl acetate extracts were prepared from each endophyte cultivated in vitro and tested for their respective antibacterial activities and antiproliferative activities against human cancer cells.

Genetic Analyses Reveal Functions for MAP2K3 and MAP2K6 in Mouse Testis Determination.

Testis determination in mammals is initiated by expression of SRY in somatic cells of the embryonic gonad. Genetic analyses in the mouse have revealed a requirement for mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling in testis determination: targeted loss of the kinases MAP3K4 and p38 MAPK causes complete XY embryonic gonadal sex reversal. Effect of ball-milling and Fe-/Al-doping on the structural aspect and visible light photocatalytic activity of TiO2 towards Escherichia coli bacteria abatement.

Escherichia coli abatement was studied in liquid phase under visible light in the presence of two commercial titania photocatalysts, and of Fe- and Al-doped titania samples prepared by high energy ball-milling. The two commercial titania photocatalysts, Aeroxide P25 (Evonik industries) exhibiting both rutile and anatase structures and MPT625 (Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha), a Fe-, Al-, P- and S-doped titania exhibiting only the rutile phase, are active suggesting that neither the structure nor the doping is the driving parameter. Although the MPT625 UV-visible spectrum is shifted towards the visible domain with respect to the P25 one, the effect on bacteria is not increased.

Mammalian sex determination is the process by which the bipotential embryonic genital ridge commits to either the testicular or ovarian fate. The existence of a gonad primordium with 2 possible developmental outcomes, depending on the presence or absence of the Y chromosome, remains a fascinating paradigm for examining the manner in which genes cooperate to establish cell fate and regulate differentiation. Development of the mouse gonad offers a unique model for the investigation of sex determination, characterised by powerful transgenic, genomic and other experimental resources for the study of the molecular control of organogenesis.

TiO2 photocatalysis damages lipids and proteins in Escherichia coli.

This study investigates the mechanisms of UV-A (315 to 400 nm) photocatalysis with titanium dioxide (TiO2) applied to the degradation of Escherichia coli and their effects on two key cellular components: lipids and proteins. The impact of TiO2 photocatalysis on E. coli survival was monitored by counting on agar plate and by assessing lipid peroxidation and performing proteomic analysis.

The photocatalytic antimicrobial properties of TiO2 were studied on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial strains taken as model strains for pathogenic species mainly implied in nosocomial infections. Capillary cytometry, coupled to a double-staining method for visualizing membrane integrity as a cell viability indicator, was highlighted as a rapid, easy-to-use, and automated numeration technique for quantitative and reproducible determination of cellular viability and thus, was able to give an accurate evaluation of the bactericidal effect of UV-A photocatalysis. Cytometry also enabled the study of TiO2-bacteria interactions and aggregation in the dark as well as TiO2 cytotoxicity.
