The present study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of dental professionals and students regarding tobacco cessation counseling (TCC) after their participation in a continuing education activity (CEA) entitled "Smoking cessation: How does the dentist participate in this decision?" at the Oral Cancer Seminar: Projeto Maio Vermelho 2021. This study utilized a pre-/post-intervention design, including a pre-intervention questionnaire with 20 close-ended questions, an educational intervention, and a post-intervention questionnaire with nine close-ended questions. Descriptive and statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 25 and GraphPad Prism 8 software.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a prevalent acute adverse effect of various cancer treatments. Accurate assessment of OM is vital for effective prevention and treatment strategies. However, a lack of validated pediatric instruments for evaluating OM can lead to unreliable data, and hinder interventional and epidemiological research.

Article Synopsis
  • The pilot study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of 0.1% tacrolimus compared to 0.05% clobetasol propionate in orabase for treating symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP) in 21 patients.
  • Patients were divided into two groups, receiving their respective treatments for 30 days, and were assessed for various health and quality of life measures.
  • Both treatments effectively reduced symptoms, but clobetasol showed a significant improvement in certain scores after one month, making it a preferred first choice due to its lower cost, while tacrolimus may be better for stubborn cases.

Dentists play a pivotal role in the early detection of oral cancer. Consequently, they are expected to possess the knowledge and the capability to recognize the features of this disease. The objective of the study is to evaluate dentists from different regions of Brazil regarding their level of knowledge and self-confidence regarding oral cancer.

Background: The incidence of oral cancer has exhibited a rise within the young population. Considering that oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) can precede the development of oral cancer, it is imperative to conduct studies in this particular younger population. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and conduct a comparative analysis of the clinical-demographic characteristics of OPMDs in two distinct age groups.

Objective: This study evaluated the influence of a single educational intervention on the perception and knowledge of strategies for communicating oral cancer diagnoses.

Methods: A educational intervention, 72 dentists and 41 dental undergraduates participated in the 'Maio Vermelho Project', a continuing education activity. Participants completed a 14-question online questionnaire concerning their experiences and perceptions of delivering difficult news.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of amitriptyline (AMT), and to identify the determinants of the treatment's effectiveness in patients diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome (BMS).

Background: Treatment of BMS is challenging and no established treatment protocol is available. AMT may be an important treatment option, cout not all patients benefit from this drug.

Purpose: Pain is highly prevalent in spinal cord injury (SCI) and a key determinant of quality of life (QoL). This is the first study to examine reciprocal associations between pain and QoL in patients undergoing their first inpatient rehabilitation after SCI.

Methods: Longitudinal data, with three measurement time points (1 month and 3 months after SCI onset, and at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation) from the Inception Cohort of the Swiss Spinal Cord Injury Cohort Study.

In recent years, teledentistry has gained visibility, especially because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Concerning oral medicine, there is great expectation, particularly about its potential to promote early diagnosis of oral lesions. In southern Brazil, two initiatives have shown a positive influence on each other and have led to greater awareness of oral cancer and more access to qualified advice on diagnosing and managing oral lesions.

Background: Studies on mental health and substance use among medical students indicated worrying prevalence but have been mainly descriptive.

Aim: To evaluate the prevalence of substance use in a sample of medical students and investigate whether mental health variables have an influence on substance use.

Methods: The data were collected as part of the first wave of the ETMED-L, an ongoing longitudinal open cohort study surveying medical students at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland).

Objective: This retrospective study analyzed the errors generated by a convolutional neural network (CNN) when performing automated classification of oral lesions according to their clinical characteristics, seeking to identify patterns in systemic errors in the intermediate layers of the CNN.

Study Design: A cross-sectional analysis nested in a previous trial in which automated classification by a CNN model of elementary lesions from clinical images of oral lesions was performed. The resulting CNN classification errors formed the dataset for this study.

The dentist plays a crucial role in identifying oral lesions as it is their responsibility to conduct the clinical examination for diagnosing diseases in this anatomical region. Dentists should be able to perform simple oral biopsies when this procedure is necessary. However, several studies point out that dentists lack experience and perceive themselves incapable of performing biopsies.

This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients' histopathological records.

The aim of this study was to develop a virtual learning object (VLO) to teach undergraduate dental students about the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to oral ulcerative lesions. The VLO was developed with information on the diagnostic process, lesion classification, and clinical-surgical management of oral ulcerative lesions. The VLO content was initially validated by a group of specialists.

Purpose: Distance learning appears to be an attractive approach to continuing education courses, but one barrier is maintaining learner engagement throughout the course. The primary aim of this research was to evaluate the operational efficacy of a private Facebook™ group (FG) in serving as a support mechanism for distance learning courses, and its impact on three fundamental dimensions: the attrition rates of participants who did not complete the course (commonly referred to as dropout rates), the rates of course completion and approval, and the overall performance of the participants.

Methods: The participants of this quasi-experimental study comprised 159 dental students and 565 dentists enrolled in an e-learning course on oral mucosal lesion diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how chronic health conditions (CHCs) affect mental health and the role of social support over 6 years.
  • It reveals a reciprocal relationship between emotional support and psychological distress, where less distress leads to more support and vice versa.
  • For practical support, the relationship is one-way, with higher distress leading to increased support at the onset of CHC.
