Influence of maternal birthplace on postpartum health and health services use.

This study examined differences in health status, rates of postpartum depression, perceptions of health services, unmet service needs, and barriers to service use among women born in and outside of Canada at 6 weeks following postpartum discharge from hospital. A secondary analysis of data gathered for a longitudinal cross-sectional survey of postpartum health and service use was conducted. Data from participants recruited from two urban hospitals were used for this analysis (n = 1,045).

International collaboration for pediatric oncology nursing leadership: Nicaragua and Canada.

In 2005, with financial support from the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, a pilot nursing leadership project linked pediatric oncology nurses from Canada with nurses at the La Mascota Hospital in Managua, Nicaragua. Following consultation with the pediatric oncology team in Nicaragua, a program was developed to strengthen clinical nursing leadership in a clinical setting through continuing education. The nurses believed that care of the patient and family improved due to the increased leadership skills of nurses in the unit and as the profile and credibility of nurses as peers in the health care team became evident.

Development of professional confidence by post diploma baccalaureate nursing students.

Professional confidence should be nurtured in a caring nursing curriculum, however there is a lack of clarity as to what confidence means, how it is perceived by students, and what educators can do to instill professional confidence in nursing students. A qualitative study using focus groups was conducted to explore the components of professional confidence as perceived by diploma-prepared registered nurses enrolled in a two-year student-centered, problem-based baccalaureate degree program. Students identified professional confidence as developing through a two-phase process.

"You need to develop more confidence" is a common refrain noted by students and faculty alike. As nurse educators, we believe that encouraging students to develop their professional confidence is an important role. Moreover, the nursing profession demands that nursing care be delivered with confidence.

Evolving as nurse educators in problem-based learning through a community of faculty development.

Effective faculty development programs are of paramount importance in this era of profound change in nursing education driven by baccalaureate-degree entry to practice and the concurrent implementation of college/university collaborative partnerships in Ontario, Canada. The overall purpose of this study was to design, disseminate, and evaluate a faculty development program involving nursing faculty from the McMaster University, Mohawk College, and Conestoga College. In keeping with selected conceptual models and responses to a needs assessment, faculty participated in a collaborative faculty development program that included a planned workshop, a mentorship program, and regular faculty development activities.

Effects of cultural sensitivity training on health care provider attitudes and patient outcomes.

Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of cultural sensitivity training on the knowledge and attitudes of health care providers, and to assess the satisfaction and health outcomes of patients from different minority groups with health care providers who received training.

Design: In this randomised controlled trial, 114 health care providers (nurses and homecare workers) and 133 patients (from two community agencies and one hospital) were randomly assigned to experimental (training) and control groups, and were followed for 18 months.

Methods: Providers completed the Cultural Awareness Questionnaire and the Dogmatism Scale.

Developing a teaching portfolio in nursing education: a reflection.

Presenting teaching accomplishments through a portfolio promotes self-reflection and provides direction for improvement and advancement decisions. The authors examine experiences, insights, and reflections about their participation in a pilot project introducing teaching portfolios. Themes of taking stock, documenting practice, and reflecting emerge.

Student and faculty learning styles in a Canadian and a Chilean self-directed, problem-based nursing program.

A descriptive comparative study was conducted to identify and compare/contrast the learning styles of nursing faculty and entry-level students in 2 self-directed (SDL), problem-based (PBL) nursing programs. The Kolb LSI-1985 was administered to 94 first-year generic students, 63 post-R.N.

Pakistan's community health workers.

Pakistan's health characteristics are worse than those of other Asian countries at similar stages of development. Its mortality rate for children under five is 139 per 1,000, and its maternal mortality is 60 per 10,000. Malnutrition in women and children is widespread; 50 per cent of children under five are stunted.

Predictors of success on the Canadian Nurses Association testing service (CNATS) examination.

This retrospective study examined the relationship of selected admissions variables and in-course performance to success in the Canadian Nurses Association Testing Service (CNATS) examinations of 114 students admitted directly from secondary school to a four-year integrated, problem-based learning (PBL) baccalaureate nursing program in Canada. Data were analyzed using two separate hierarchical stepwise regression equations. The first equation examined a set of secondary school grades (Ontario Academic Credits, or OACs) used to calculate university admission averages and their ability to predict CNATS performance.

Experiential learning: an approach to transcultural education for nursing.

Delivery of culturally appropriate health care in our pluralistic society demands that practitioners develop special attitudes, knowledge, and skills. Experimental learning is a powerful methodology for addressing the affective, as well as the cognitive, domain of learning. The exploration of personal values is an essential first step in developing cultural awareness in order to move learners beyond ethnocentrism through awareness, understanding, acceptance, and appreciation of other cultures if learners are to truly adopt a multicultural approach to their professional practice.
