Solid dispersions as effective curcumin vehicles to obtain k-carrageenan functional films for olive oil preservation.

Synthetic packaging materials offer cost efficiency and performance but pose environmental risks. This study explores sustainable alternatives by developing k-carrageenan (KC) films functionalized with curcumin, using solid dispersions (SDs) to improve curcumin's compatibility, addressing the challenge of incorporating hydrophobic functionalities into hydrophilic film matrices. Films with varying curcumin content (1-20 wt%; KC1-KC20) were compared to a base film without curcumin (KC0) regarding water solubility, vapor permeability, water contact angle, and tensile properties.

Esterification of dextran by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA): Physicochemical characterization and functional properties assessment.

The chemical modification of biopolymers to enhance their functional properties in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries is an area of particular interest today. In this study, different molecular weight dextrans were chemically modified for the first time with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA). This reaction involves an esterification process wherein the hydroxy groups of dextran are partially substituted by a carbonaceous chain, imparting hydrophobic properties to dextran molecules and, consequently, an amphiphilic nature.

Antioxidant Activity of Egg Yolk Protein Hydrolysates Obtained by Enzymatic and Sub-Critical Water Hydrolysis.

Obtaining peptides with antioxidant properties by enzymatic hydrolysis has been widely described; however, the use of non-enzymatic methods to obtain peptides with antioxidant capacities has been poorly investigated. In this study, non-soluble proteins obtained from delipidated egg yolk granules were hydrolyzed with trypsin, and with a non-enzymatic method using sub-critical water hydrolysis under a non-oxidizing (nitrogen) and oxidizing (oxygen) atmosphere. The effect of the sub-critical water hydrolysis on the amino acids' composition of the hydrolysates was assessed.

Effect of Birch Sap as Solvent and Source of Bioactive Compounds in Casein and Gelatine Films.

Birch sap consists of a natural water-based solution with valuable compounds such as minerals, sugars, organic acids and phenolic compounds that can be used advantageously in the preparation of edible films. In this study, gelatine- and casein-based films were prepared using birch sap as biopolymer solvent and source of bioactive compounds with the aim of developing new bioactive materials for food packaging. The physical, mechanical, barrier, antioxidant and iron-chelating properties of the obtained films were investigated.

Egg Yolk Oil as a Plasticizer for Polylactic Acid Films.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is known to be one of the most extensively used biodegradable thermoplastic polyesters, with the potential to replace conventional petroleum-based packaging materials; however, the low flexibility of films prepared using PLA has limited the applications of this biopolymer. In this study, in order to improve the mechanical properties of PLA films and to provide them with antioxidant properties, egg yolk oil was used as a biobased plasticizer. For this purpose, PLA films with increasing concentrations of egg yolk oil were prepared and the effects of this oil on the light transmission, transparency, colour, water vapour permeability, solubility, antioxidant activity and mechanical properties of the films were characterized.

As part of our ongoing efforts to identify novel ligands for the metabotropic glutamate 2 and 3 (mGlu) receptors, we have incorporated substitution at the C3 and C4 positions of the (1S,2R,5R,6R)-2-amino-bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane-2,6-dicarboxylic acid scaffold to generate mGlu antagonists.

Novel bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane analogs as antagonists of metabotropic glutamate 2/3 receptors for the treatment of depression.

Negative modulators of metabotropic glutamate 2 & 3 receptors demonstrate antidepressant-like activity in animal models and hold promise as novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Herein we describe our efforts to prepare and optimize a series of conformationally constrained 3,4-disubstituted bicyclo[3.1.

Diagnosis and risk stratification in patients with anti-RNP autoimmunity.

Introduction: Anti-RNP autoantibodies occur either in mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) (with a frequently favorable prognosis), or in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) cases with aggressive major organ disease. It is uncertain how to assess for the risk of severe disease in anti-RNP + patients.

Methods: Following institutional review board-approved protocols, clinical data and blood were collected from patients with known or suspected anti-RNP autoimmunity and normal controls in a cohort study.

Comparison of mortality of ESRD patients with lupus by initial dialysis modality.

Background And Objectives: Little is known regarding whether mortality among ESRD patients with SLE differs between those initiating with peritoneal dialysis (PD) versus hemodialysis (HD). This study compared the mortality risk of ESRD patients with SLE initiating with PD versus HD after matching their baseline sociodemographic and clinical factors.

Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: Of 11,023 ESRD patients with SLE initiating dialysis with PD or HD between 1995 and 2006 with complete records in the US Renal Data System, 1352 pairs were matched on 13 predictors utilizing a predicted probability of group membership into the PD group using propensity score matching.

Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome with severe acute thrombotic microangiopathy and hemorrhagic complications.

The catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) is a rare life-threatening form of the antiphospholipid syndrome characterized by disseminated vascular thrombosis resulting in multiorgan failure. On an exceedingly rare occasion, CAPS can be associated with severe hemorrhagic manifestations. We report a young woman with a history of several spontaneous miscarriages who presented with menorrhagia and hemoptysis.

Neck pain from a rheumatologic perspective.

This article provides a comprehensive review of rheumatologic considerations for a clinician when evaluating a patient with neck pain. Clearly, anatomic derangements of the cervical spine should be considered when a patient complains of cervicalgia. However, one must also entertain the possibility of a systemic illness as the cause of the pain.

Landfills as risk factors for respiratory disease in children.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between exposure to a landfill site closed 6 years previously and respiratory symptoms in children aged up to 13 years.

Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in Várzea Paulista, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. One adult in every household in a neighborhood close to the landfill and from a randomized sample of households in another neighborhood with similar socioeconomic characteristics but no landfill were interviewed and asked about respiratory symptoms and other variables relating to children aged up to 13.

Regioselective palladium-catalyzed arylation of 4-chloropyrazoles.

A highly regioselective Pd-catalyzed arylation of N-methylpyrazoles with aryl bromides is described. This transformation was studied extensively via automated reaction screening. A Design of Experiments (DoE) approach for optimizing the critical parameters was applied, resulting in excellent conditions for preparing selectively 5-arylpyrazoles in moderate to excellent yields under mild conditions.

[Ischemic optic neuropathy after lumbar spine surgery].

Ischemic optic neuropathy is the most common cause of visual complications after non-ophthalmic surgery. The incidence has varied in different case series, but prone-position spine surgery appears to be involved in most of the reports. We present the case of a 47-year-old woman who developed near total blindness in the left eye following lumbar spine fusion surgery involving the loss of 900 mL of blood.

Automated liquid-liquid extraction workstation for library synthesis and its use in the parallel and chromatography-free synthesis of 2-alkyl-3-alkyl-4-(3H)-quinazolinones.

An automated liquid-liquid extraction workstation has been developed. This module processes up to 96 samples in an automated and parallel mode avoiding the time-consuming and intensive sample manipulation during the workup process. To validate the workstation, a highly automated and chromatography-free synthesis of differentially substituted quinazolin-4(3H)-ones with two diversity points has been carried out using isatoic anhydride as starting material.

[Spirometry in primary care in Navarre, Spain].

Objective: To analyze the use and quality of spirometry in primary care settings in Navarre, Spain.

Patients And Methods: A questionnaire was completed simultaneously by professionals responsible for spirometry in all of the primary health care centers in Navarre. Data were collected on availability, model of spirometer, frequency of use, calibration, methods, personnel responsible for testing, and training of personnel.

[Incidence of influenza and influenza vaccine effectiveness in the 2004-2005 season].

Background: To quantify the incidence of flu in different groups of the population of Navarra in the 2004-2005 season, and to evaluate the effectiveness of anti-flu vaccination.

Methods: The analysis of influenza cases in the system of compulsory notificable diseases was complemented by the individualised notifications in the network of sentinel doctors that covers a population of 22,339 inhabitants. The coverage and effectiveness of the vaccine was studied.

Camelostrongylus mentulatus in domestic goats from the Iberian Peninsula.

Two male worms of Camelostrongylus mentulatus were found in one of 84 murciano-granadina goats in Murcia, south-eastern Spain. This is the first report of C. mentulatus in goats in the Iberian peninsula and the possible origin and transmission of this nematode in Spain are discussed.
