Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST), a potential complication of pyriform sinus fistula (PSF), is a rare clinical condition as the thyroid gland is remarkably resistant to infections. Lack of awareness of the entity contributes to the rarity and frustrating recurrences. We performed a retrospective review of all cases of AST due to PSF treated at our institution over a 10-year period.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to review the presenting features of pediatric patients found to have omental infarction with a normal appendix at surgery.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of all patients with surgically proven omental infarction treated at KK Women's and Children's Hospital between May 1997 and January 2004.

Results: Twelve children (10 boys and 2 girls) were treated for primary omental infarction.
