With the improvement in survival and the reduction in morbidity related to sickle cell disease (SCD), aspects related to reproductive health are emerging as a priority in the care of affected people. We conducted a systematic review looking for evidence describing the functional ovarian reserve levels in women with sickle cell disease. To locate studies, a search was performed in electronic databases, in addition to preprint servers and reference lists of selected publications.

  • The study evaluated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Brazilian urology residents' clinical practices, education, health, and lifestyle after a year of socio-economic restrictions.
  • A survey revealed that over 50% of urology residents experienced significant reductions in surgical procedures, particularly in kidney transplants and minor surgeries, which could lead to a critical skills gap post-pandemic.
  • Additionally, many residents reported heightened stress and deteriorating mental and physical health due to the pressures of assisting COVID-19 patients and concerns about infections.

The Omaha System has been providing a useful clinical documentation structure for health practice, education, and research since 1975. To understand its current applications, we updated a literature review from 2013, using the same descriptors ('Omaha System') which resulted in 559 documents. After applying filters and different forms of screening, 35 papers published from 2012 to 2022 composed the final sample for the review.

My Strengths My Health (MSMH) is a simplified version of the Omaha System developed for the use of patients and their caregivers. Its main objective is to enable a whole-person assessment with the participation of the patients in understanding the concepts that comprise their care plan. Since 2021, we joined a worldwide initiative to translate MSMH to other languages and this paper reports the Brazilian experience in 3 stages, developed from January 2022 to December 2023: translation and back translation of terms, its validation by freshman nursing students and its adoption by patients at an outpatient facility.

This study assessed the technological feasibility of microencapsulating vitamin C (VC) via coacervation between yeast cells (YC) and xanthan gum (XG). The interaction efficiency between YC and XG was examined across various pHs and ratios, while characterizing the microcapsules in terms of encapsulation efficiency, particle size, and thermal and chemical stability. Additionally, in vitro digestion experiments were conducted to determine the digestion efficiency and bioavailability of the bioactive compound.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on clinical and surgical practice, educational activities, health and lifestyle behavior of Brazilian urology residents.

Materials And Methods: A web-based survey was sent to 468 Brazilian urology residents from postgraduate years (PGY) 3 to 5 to collect data on clinical practice and training after 4 months of COVID-19. We also assessed health-related and behavior changes, rate of infection by SARS-CoV-2, deployment to the front line of COVID-19, residents' concerns, and access to personal protective equipment (PPE).

Article Synopsis
  • - A new and simplified scoring tool, called the LUTS visual score (LUTS-V), was developed to assess lower urinary tract symptoms in men by modifying the existing visual prostate symptom score.
  • - The LUTS-V was validated against the International Prostatic Symptom Score using a study of 306 men, showing a strong correlation (r=0.72) and good agreement between the two assessment methods, indicated by a low bias of 5.6%.
  • - With an area under the ROC curve of 83%, LUTS-V proved to be effective in identifying moderate to severe urinary symptoms, suggesting it could be a valuable tool for diagnosis and monitoring in clinical settings.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of hypogonadism in a population of men with SCD and characterize its aetiology. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with the development of hypogonadism, but there is still controversy regarding its aetiology and clinical implications.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of 34 men with SCD aged > 18 years.

The scope of this paper was to verify the association between the practice of physical activity of different types and the use of insulin in adults and the elderly. This is a cross-sectional population-based study with data from the survey entitled Surveillance of risk factors and protection for chronic diseases by telephone (VIGITEL 2013). The sample consisted of individuals aged ≥18 years, living in the 27 Brazilian capitals and diagnosed with diabetes.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common complaints in the adult male population and have a negative affect in the quality of life and represent an economic burden for the healthcare system worldwide. The International Prostatism Symptom Score (IPSS) is a validated tool for assessing these symptoms, but patients with low literacy may have difficulties comprehending and completing it accurately. The Urgency, Weak Stream, Incomplete Emptying, and Nocturia (UWIN) questionnaire was developed as a shorter tool in the assessment of LUTS to improve accuracy and minimize error.

Purpose: To evaluate renal repair in rats who had renal infarction induced by the obstruction of blood flow in the renal artery and were treated with transplantation of adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cell.

Methods: 16-week-old Wistar rats (n=72) were used, submitted to celiotomy and had of the renal artery and vein clipped for 24 hours. The animals were randomly assigned to 10 experimental homogeneous groups, corresponding to the treatments with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or adipose tissue derived mesenchymal stem cell (ADSC), duration of application (24 or 48 hours), and site of transplantation (lateral vein of the tail or intrarenal).

A fast and simple dilute-and-shoot procedure for determination of Al, As, Ba, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, Ti, V, Zn and Zr in deodorants by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) was developed. Sample preparation was carried out by diluting 1 mL of deodorant sample in 1% (v v) HNO. The accuracy of the analytical procedure was evaluated using addition and recovery experiments, and recoveries ranged from 80 to 119%.

One of the most important postharvest plant pathogens that affect strawberries, grapes and tomatoes is , known as gray mold. The fungus remains in latent form until spore germination conditions are good, making infection control difficult, causing great losses in the whole production chain. This study aimed to purify and identify phenazine-1-carboxylic acid (PCA) produced by the LV strain and to determine its antifungal activity against .

Characterization, with emphasis on the rheological properties, of Cassia grandis seeds galactomannan gel containing immobilized Cramoll 1-4 is presented. The gels, with and without immobilized Cramoll 1-4, were evaluated along time by rheometry, pH, color, microbial contamination and lectin hemagglutinating activity (HA). Rheological determinations confirmed the gels to be very stable up to 30 days with variations occurring after this period.

Antithrombin inhibits blood coagulation through the interaction with serine proteases in both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways. In addition, antithrombin also shows anti-inflammatory properties, which are independent of its effects on coagulation. This work shows for the first time the cloning and sequencing of antithrombin from a snake species.

The cyanobacterial community from Brazilian mangrove ecosystems was examined using a culture-dependent method. Fifty cyanobacterial strains were isolated from soil, water and periphytic samples collected from Cardoso Island and Bertioga mangroves using specific cyanobacterial culture media. Unicellular, homocytous and heterocytous morphotypes were recovered, representing five orders, seven families and eight genera (Synechococcus, Cyanobium, Cyanobacterium, Chlorogloea, Leptolyngbya, Phormidium, Nostoc and Microchaete).
