Context: Serum thyroglobulin (Tg) measured by immunometric assay (IMA) is prone to underestimation due to Tg autoantibody (TgAb) interference, often prompting reflex Tg measurement by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (MS) or radioimmunoassay (RIA).

Objective: IMA, MS, and RIA methodologies were used to measure serum Tg in TgAb-negative (TgAb-) and TgAb-positive (TgAb+) patients with either distant metastatic differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) or hyperthyroidism (HY)-patients in whom a detectable serum Tg would be expected.

Results: When TgAb was absent, all methodologies detected Tg in the sera of all DTC and HY patients and reported appropriate Tg trends and treatment responses for DTC patients with progressive distant metastatic disease, albeit with high between-method variability (> 30% coefficient of variability).

Phosphorous (P) removal in wastewater treatment is essential to prevent eutrophication in water bodies. Side-stream enhanced biological phosphorous removal (S2EBPR) is utilized to improve biological P removal by recirculating internal streams within a side-stream reactor to generate biodegradable carbon (C) for polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs). In this study, a full-scale S2EBPR system in a water resource recovery facility (WRRF) was evaluated for 5 months.

Population-level surveillance of student weight status (particularly monitoring students with a body mass index (BMI) ≥95th percentile) remains of public health interest. However, there is mounting concern about objectively measuring student BMI in schools. Using data from the nation's largest school district, we determined how closely students' self-reported BMI approximates objectively-measured BMI, aggregated at the school level, to inform decision-making related to school BMI measurement practices.

Purpose Of Review: The impact of maternal iodine supplementation (MIS) during pregnancy on thyroid function and child neurodevelopmental outcomes in areas of mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency (MMID) remains unclear.

Recent Findings: Despite growing success of salt iodization programs, a 2022 meta-analysis found that 53% of pregnant patients worldwide continue to have insufficient iodine intake during pregnancy. A 2021 randomized controlled trial (RCT) found that MIS in women with mild iodine deficiency led to iodine sufficiency and positive effects on maternal thyroglobulin.

Although aluminum- and iron-based chemicals have been broadly used as the two most common types of coagulants for wastewater treatment, their impacts on the performance of downstream sludge management can be quite different and have not been well understood. This work reviewed and analyzed their similarities and differences in the context of the anaerobic digestion performance, dewaterability of digested sludge, and odor emission from dewatered biosolids. In short, iron-based coagulants tend to show less negative impact than aluminum-based coagulants.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is conceptualized as a synaptic failure disorder in which loss of glutamatergic synapses is a major driver of cognitive decline. Thus, novel therapeutic strategies aimed at regenerating synapses may represent a promising approach to mitigate cognitive deficits in AD patients. At present, no disease-modifying drugs exist for AD, and approved therapies are palliative at best, lacking in the ability to reverse the synaptic failure.

Abnormally high-odor detection threshold (DT) values were detected for biosolids produced at one of the water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) of Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. As an inexpensive countermeasure, aeration of thickened sludge holding tanks (SHTs) was tested as a solution for mitigating the subsequent biosolids odor emission. Experimental results indicated that the extremely low-oxidation reduction potential (ORP) in the SHTs and the fermentation of high-rate-activated sludge were primarily contributors to the odor emission from the dewatered cake.

Financial exploitation (FE) in old age is devastating and common; however, the neural correlates of FE are poorly understood. Previous studies of FE in older adults have implicated declines in decision making and social cognition as two risk factors for FE in later life. Here we examined whether functional connectivity among brain regions implicated in decision making and social cognition differed for those with an experience of FE vs.
