Article Synopsis
  • - African swine fever (ASF) has become a global threat to the swine industry since its emergence in Africa and subsequent spread to Europe, Asia, and Oceania since 2007, necessitating the urgent development of a safe and effective vaccine.
  • - The paper reviews various vaccine candidates tested over the last century, identifying that live attenuated vaccines show the most promise for providing protection against ASF, despite challenges in ensuring safety and cross-protection.
  • - Advances in molecular biology have improved the development of live attenuated vaccine candidates by allowing the deletion of specific genes, but more research is needed to better understand immune response to create a commercial vaccine.
