Synovial fluid NMR-based metabolomics in septic and aseptic revision total knee arthroplasty: Implications on diagnosis and treatment.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most challenging complications following total knee arthroplasty. Despite its importance, there is a paucity of reports in the literature regarding its pathogenesis. Recently, cellular metabolic reprogramming has been shown to play an important role in the progression and outcome of infectious diseases.

Evaluating recommended audiometric changes to candidacy using the speech intelligibility index.

Introduction: The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has derived candidacy guidelines for cochlear implants in the UK based on audiometric thresholds (90 dB HL or above at 2 and 4 kHz; hereafter referred to as the 90 dB HL criteria). Recent research has proposed that these criteria should be changed to 80 dB HL at 2 and 4 kHz (hereafter referred to as the 80 dB HL criteria) in the ear to be implanted.

Methods: In this study, we analysed aided SII scores derived for different hearing loss profiles falling within the current 90 dB HL criteria and equivalent profiles falling within the new 80 dB HL criteria.

A double-blind randomized clinical trial of a silorane-based resin composite in class 2 restorations: 18-month follow-up.

Purpose: To compare the clinical performance of a silorane-based with a methacrylate-based restorative system in class 2 restorations after an 18-month follow-up.

Methods: This randomized, double-blind and controlled study included 33 subjects receiving 100 direct resin composite restorations that were completely randomized to silorane-based group (Filtek P90/Silorane System Adhesive - 3M ESPE) or methacrylate-based group (Filtek P60/Adper SE Plus - 3M ESPE). The restorative system was determined by chance using a coin toss until 50 units for each group were completed.

Severe complication of posterior nasal packing: Case Report.

Introduction:  Severe Epistaxis is common in patients with head trauma, especially when associated with multiple fractures of the face and skull base. Several methods of controlling bleeding that can be imposed. The anterior nasal tapenade associated with posterior Foley catheter is one of the most widespread, and the universal availability of necessary materials or their apparent ease of execution.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the larynx.

Introduction:  The extramedullary plasmocytoma is one of the localized forms of malignancy of the plasma cells, which has multiple myeloma main diagnosis. Its main site to the head and neck, but with a rare presentation in the larynx.

Objective:  To describe a case of extramedullary plasmocytoma of the larynx, with literature review.

Bilateral vocal fold immobility: diagnosis and treatment.

Unlabelled: Vocal fold immobility may be due to bilateral neurogenic paralysis, cricoarytenoid joint fixation, laryngeal synechiae, or posterior glottic stenosis. Treatment aims to establish a patent airway and preserve the function of the glottic sphincter and voice quality.

Objectives: To analyze the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in cases of bilateral vocal fold immobility seen at our unit.

Anthropometric data as predictors of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Severity.

Unlabelled: The Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome is a chronic disease characterized by episodes upper airway collapse, and has been associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity.

Aim: To correlate the neck, abdominal and pelvic circumference with the AHI and oxyhemoglobin saturation in OSA patients, and to correlate these values with disease severity.

Materials And Methods: A prospective descriptive study of 82 patients evaluated complaints suggesting OSA, from July 2008 to March 2010.

The Escherichia coli btuE gene, encodes a glutathione peroxidase that is induced under oxidative stress conditions.

Most aerobic organisms are exposed to oxidative stress. Looking for enzyme activities involved in the bacterial response to this kind of stress, we focused on the btuE-encoded Escherichia coli BtuE, an enzyme that shares homology with the glutathione peroxidase (GPX) family. This work deals with the purification and characterization of the btuE gene product.
