Background: In standard weaning from mechanical ventilation, a successful spontaneous breathing test (SBT) consisting of 30 min 8 cmHO pressure-support ventilation (PSV8) without positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is followed by extubation with continuous suctioning; however, these practices might promote derecruitment. Evidence supports the feasibility and safety of extubation without suctioning. Ultrasound can assess lung aeration and respiratory muscles.

Commercial polyurethane (PU) coating formulations have been modified with 1-(hydroxymethyl)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (HMD) both in bulk (0.5 and 1% w/w) and onto the coatings surface as an N-halamine precursor, to obtain clear coatings with high virucidal activity. Upon immersion in diluted chlorine bleaching, the hydantoin structure on the grafted PU membranes was transformed into N-halamine groups, with a high surface chlorine concentration (40-43μg/cm).

Lectins from fruiting bodies are a diverse group of sugar-binding proteins from mushrooms that face the biologically relevant challenge of discriminating self- from non-self carbohydrate structures, therefore providing a basis for an innate defence system. Such a system entails both detection and destruction of invaders and/or feeders, and in contrast to more complex organisms with immense immune systems, these two functions normally rely on multitasking lectins, namely, lectins with different functional modules. Here, we present a novel fungal lectin, LBL, from the basidiomycete Laccaria bicolor.

Pseudo interpenetrating vinyl-caprolactam (VCL) based thermosensitive tubular hydrogels with a volume phase transition temperature, VPTT, around 35 °C, have been prepared by combining two different crosslinkers, a di-methacrylate (C1) and a di-vinyl urea (C2). The molar ratio between the two crosslinkers (for a global crosslinker molar percentage of 1.9) has shown to play a key role on the properties of the hydrogel.

Article Synopsis
  • Remdesivir (RDV) was the first FDA-approved antiviral for treating severe COVID-19 by inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 replication through targeting an essential protein (nsp12) in the virus.
  • In a study, 38.3% of patients showed no response to RDV treatment, with specific genetic mutations detected in non-responders, indicating possible pathways to RDV resistance.
  • The findings highlight the need for ongoing monitoring of genetic variations in the virus, especially among immunosuppressed patients, to inform treatment strategies and health surveillance efforts as RDV continues to be used.

is a commensal yeast that inhabits the gastrointestinal tract of humans; increased colonization of this yeast in this niche has implicated the master regulator of the white-opaque transition, Wor1, by mechanisms not completely understood. We have addressed the role that this transcription factor has on commensalism by the characterization of strains overexpressing this gene. We show that overexpression causes an alteration of the total lipid content of the fungal cell and significantly alters the composition of structural and reserve molecular species lipids as determined by lipidomic analysis.

We report on the preparation of micropatterned functional surfaces produced by inducing an out-of-plane deformation on elastic substrates and fixing these by creating a rigid oxidized top layer. Specifically, the elastic substrate used was Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and the rigid layer on top was created by ozonation of this material. We evidenced that the surface pattern formed is directly dependent on the pressure applied, the mechanical properties of the elastic substrate and on the dimensions and shape of the mask employed to define the exposed and non-exposed areas.

This study investigated whether treatment with plant-based polyphenols (PB-P) affected the biochemical and/or biomechanical properties of dentin extracellular matrix (ECM). Three PB-Ps were evaluated: luteolin (LT), galangin (GL), and proanthocyanidin (PAC). Because dentin ECM requires demineralization before treatment, this study also assessed the effect of these PB-Ps on dentin demineralized by two different chemicals.

Anthropogenic factors have significantly influenced the frequency, duration, and intensity of meteorological drought in many regions of the globe, and the increased frequency of wildfires is among the most visible consequences of human-induced climate change. Despite the fire role in determining biodiversity outcomes in different ecosystems, wildfires can cause negative impacts on wildlife. We conducted ground surveys along line transects to estimate the first-order impact of the 2020 wildfires on vertebrates in the Pantanal wetland, Brazil.
