Glycans as shapers of tumour microenvironment: A sweet driver of T-cell-mediated anti-tumour immune response.

Essentially all cells are covered with a dense coat of different glycan structures/sugar chains, giving rise to the so-called glycocalyx. Changes in cellular glycosylation are a hallmark of cancer, affecting most of the pathophysiological processes associated with malignant transformation, including tumour immune responses. Glycans are chief macromolecules that define T-cell development, differentiation, fate, activation and signalling.

LONG TERM FOLLOW-UP IN SURGICAL STAGE I NON-SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER - A SINGLE CENTER EXPERIENCE.

Introduction: Lung cancer has a high mortality rate with an overall survival of 18% at 5 years. Surgical treatment is the gold standard for early stages and is associated with high rates of resolution with a 5-year survival of 80% reported in large studies.

Purpose: To determinethe survival of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in stage IA (T1N0M0) undergoing surgical treatment with curative intent in our center.

Combined lung-kidney transplantation: First case in Portugal.

A significant dysfunction of another organ is usually considered an absolute contraindication for lung transplantation, unless multiorgan transplantation is indicated and practical, as is the case of combined lung-kidney transplantation. Few cases of combined lung-kidney transplantation have been described in the literature; however, it is known that, in certain cases, it is the only way to offer an opportunity to selected patients with renal and lung dysfunction. The authors are not aware of any previously published case of a patient receiving both extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration as a bridge for combined kidney-lung transplantation.

Root coverage of gingival recessions with non-carious cervical lesions: a controlled clinical trial.

Objective: The non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) is commonly produced by improper toothbrushing techniques, occlusion trauma, anatomic mal-positioned teeth, and acid erosion, thus sharing the same etiology of gingival recession (GR). The association of a graft to the coronally advanced flap had demonstrated the best long-term outcome for root coverage (RC). However, substitutes for the autogenous graft must be studied.

The Renin-Angiotensin System and the Cerebrovascular Diseases: Experimental and Clinical Evidence.

Cerebrovascular Diseases (CVD) comprise a wide spectrum of disorders, all sharing an acquired or inherited alteration of the cerebral vasculature. CVD have been associated with important changes in systemic and tissue Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS). The aim of this review was to summarize and to discuss recent findings related to the modulation of RAS components in CVD.

Disseminated histoplasmosis in HIV-infected patients: determinants of relapse and mortality in a north-eastern area of Brazil.

Many relapses and deaths resulting from disseminated histoplasmosis (DH) in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients have been observed in an endemic area in north-eastern Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk factors associated with the clinical outcomes of DH/AIDS coinfection in patients from the state of Ceará, Brazil. A retrospective cohort of AIDS patients, after their hospital discharge due to first DH episode in the period 2002-2008, was followed until December 31, 2010, to investigate the factors associated with relapse and mortality.
