Role of ultrasound in diagnosis of neonatal breast enlargement: a newborn case report.

Neonatal breast enlargement is a hormone-related condition, mostly asymptomatic\physiological, with a well-recognizable sonographic appearance but limited data in the literature. It can be uni-or bilateral. Typically described in the first week of life, the transient lesion disappears spontaneously within 6 months.

Management of NEC: Surgical Treatment and Role of Traditional X-ray Versus Ultrasound Imaging, Experience of a Single Centre.

Introduction: Necrotizing enterocolitis is the most common cause of the postnatal critical conditions and remains one of the dominant causes of newborns' death in Neonatal Intensive Care. The morbidity and mortality associated with necrotizing enterocolitis remains largely unchanged and the incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis continues to increase. There is no general agreement regarding the surgical treatment of the necrotizing enterocolitis.

Multicenter retrospective study on management and outcome of newborns affected by surgical necrotizing enterocolitis.

Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common surgical emergency in newborns and it is still a leading cause of death despite the improvements reached in the management of the critically ill neonate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate risk factors, surgical treatments and outcome of surgical NEC.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated a multicentric group of 184 patients with surgical NEC over a period of 5 years (2008-2012).

Cytogenetic evaluation of isochromosome 17q in posterior fossa tumors of children and correlation with clinical outcome in medulloblastoma. Detection of a novel chromosomal abnormality.

Background: A number of chromosomal abnormalities have been described in the presence of central nervous system tumors; isochromosome 17q, representing a loss of heterozygosity for the short arm of the chromosome 17, is the one most frequently reported in association with medulloblastoma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic correlation of this variable, compared with other variables (surgery extent and radiotherapy), with survival.

Methods And Results: We looked for the presence of i(17q) in 32 children affected by posterior fossa tumors, including 16 medulloblastomas and 2 teratoid/rhabdoid tumors.
