The Coleção de Flebotomíneos ("Phlebotomine Collection"; FIOCRUZ/COLFLEB) held at Fiocruz Minas is a curated biological collection comprising approximately 80 000 individual specimens of 370 species of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae, Phlebotominae). These were mostly collected from the Americas in the last 80 years by entomologists interested in understanding and controlling the vector-borne disease leishmaniases. Since 2010, the metadata of each biological specimen held in FIOCRUZ/COLFLEB, including the back catalogue of those deposited in previous decades, has been digitized.

Our attempts to exploit antibiotic treatment of colonized Phlebotomus duboscqi sand flies in order to improve their vector competency for Leishmania major resulted instead in flies that were refractory to the development of transmissible infections due to the inability of the parasite to survive and to colonize the anterior midgut with infective, metacyclic stage promastigotes. The parasite survival and development defect could be overcome by feeding the flies on different symbiont bacteria but not by feeding them on bacterial supernatants or replete medium.

Compared to the non-mutant Micro-Tom (MT), we observed that the malondialdehyde (MDA) content was enhanced in the diageotropica (dgt) and lutescent (l) mutants, whilst the highest levels of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) were observed in high pigment 1 (hp1) and aurea (au) mutants. The analyses of antioxidant enzymes revealed that all mutants exhibited reduced catalase (CAT) activity when compared to MT.
