Article Synopsis
  • Liver cirrhosis is a significant global health issue that often goes undiagnosed until severe complications arise, highlighting the need for tools to identify at-risk individuals earlier.
  • Researchers developed the LiverRisk score, utilizing demographic and lab data from a large international cohort to categorize individuals into different risk groups for future liver-related issues.
  • The LiverRisk score demonstrated superior predictive accuracy for liver stiffness and related outcomes compared to existing serum biomarkers, effectively aiding in the identification of those at heightened risk for liver disease complications.

Cirrhosis represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality, leading to a marked impairment in the quality of life of patients and their caregivers, and resulting in a major burden on healthcare systems. Currently, in most countries, nurses still play a limited role in the care of patients with cirrhosis, which is mainly restricted to the care of patients hospitalised for acute complications of the disease. The current manuscript reviews the established and potential new and innovative roles that nurses can play in the care of patients with cirrhosis.

Background: The development of liver cirrhosis is usually an asymptomatic process until late stages when complications occur. The potential reversibility of the disease is dependent on early diagnosis of liver fibrosis and timely targeted treatment. Recently, the use of non-invasive tools has been suggested for screening of liver fibrosis, especially in subjects with risk factors for chronic liver disease.

Whether tubular injury develops in patients with acute kidney injury owing to hepatorenal syndrome (AKI-HRS) is controversial. We performed repeated measurements of biomarkers of tubular injury during a 14-day period in 60 patients with cirrhosis and AKI (34 with AKI-HRS meeting the classical definition of type 1 HRS and 26 with AKI owing to acute tubular necrosis, AKI-ATN). Nineteen of 34 patients had resolution of AKI-HRS, while the remainder had persistent AKI-HRS.

Article Synopsis
  • Decompensated cirrhosis (DC) is a serious liver condition that can lead to high death rates, especially when it turns into acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF).
  • Researchers wanted to see if measuring a protein called L-FABP in urine could help predict which DC patients are at higher risk of complications or death.
  • The study found that higher urine L-FABP levels were linked to worse outcomes in patients, making it a potential tool for doctors to assess patient risks.
