Understanding the needs of women considering risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy.

Background: Because of the significantly increased lifetime risk of ovarian cancer associated with inheritance of a germline mutation in the BRCA1/2 genes, women with a deleterious mutation are recommended to undergo risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy at age 35 years or once child-bearing is complete. Significant time is often spent by nurses trained in genetics providing counseling to improve the decision-making process. The decision to undergo surgery is complex and laden with several sources of uncertainty.

A prospective study of quality of life among women undergoing risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy versus gynecologic screening for ovarian cancer.

Objective: The primary objective of the study was to prospectively assess quality of life (QOL) among women at increased risk of ovarian cancer who are undergoing risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) or serial screening.

Methods: Women at increased risk of ovarian cancer who were undergoing RRSO were recruited into the study. At-risk women undergoing serial screening for early detection of ovarian cancer served as a comparison group.

A parent-adolescent intervention to increase sexual risk communication: results of a randomized controlled trial.

This article reports results of a randomized controlled trial designed to test an intervention to increase parent-adolescent sexual risk communication among Mexican parents. Data were analyzed from parents (n = 791) randomly assigned to an HIV risk reduction or health promotion intervention. Measures were administered at pretest, posttest, and 6- and 12-month follow-ups.

La uniendo de fronteras: collaboration to develop HIV prevention strategies for Mexican and Latino youth.

AIDS is a global epidemic. Regardless of the present incidence of AIDS, all countries must confront the threat of this devastating disease. The shared border and continued migration between Mexico and the United States as well as shared concerns about HIV/AIDS are compelling reasons to promote AIDS prevention as an important public health endeavor for both countries.

Ovarian cancer screening and prevention.

Objectives: To review current ovarian cancer prevention and detection recommendations using a risk assessment framework, and discuss the genes related to hereditary ovarian cancer syndromes.

Data Sources: Published articles, consensus opinions, and reports.

Conclusions: Women at highest risk are those with a family history and/or genetic predisposition.
