Article Synopsis
  • Hypoxia in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients leads to subtle heart issues, even with normal left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), by reducing left ventricular (LV) dynamic deformation and diastolic reserve.
  • A study used various echocardiography techniques on 55 OSA patients and 35 controls, revealing that OSA patients had significantly lower LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) both at rest and during peak exercise, along with higher pulmonary artery pressure responses.
  • The findings suggest that OSA patients experience subclinical left ventricular dysfunction and increased oxidative burst levels, indicating the need for therapies to enhance LV function and improve the quality of life for these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypopneas are more frequent than apneas in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) linked to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), according to a study of 100 patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs).
  • The study identified a unique breathing pattern called hyperpnea-hypopnea periodic breathing (HHPB) in ILD-OSA patients, characterized by alternating cycles of hyperpnea and hypopneas, which was absent in pure OSA patients.
  • Oxygen treatment significantly improved symptoms in ILD-OSA patients with a particular hypopnea/apnea ratio, highlighting the need for further research on the causes and treatment of HHPB in this population.

Recent evidence suggests that alterations of the immune responses are associated with the inflammatory nature of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and of its related co-morbidities. In this scenario, we asked whether circulating dendritic cell (DC) subsets may be possible players as their role has not yet been detailed. The frequency distribution of peripheral blood myeloid (mDC1 and mDC2) and plasmacytoid (p) DCs was investigated by mean of multi-parametric flow cytometry in 45 OSA patients (mean age: 53 yrs; M = 29) at the time of the first diagnosis and compared to 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

Purpose Of Review: To update the current knowledge concerning sleep complaints and breathing disorders in myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2) and to better understand if sleep and breathing symptoms may add a further clinical definition of DM2.

Recent Findings: Although DM2 has been poorly evaluated, the most relevant sleep disorders are sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) (37.5-66.

Transthoracic needle biopsy (TTNB) of the lung is a well-established technique for diagnosing many thoracic lesions, and is an important alternative to more invasive surgical procedures. Complications of TTNB include pneumothorax, hemoptysis, hemothorax, infection, and air embolism, with the most common complication as pneumothorax. From June 2011 to June 2014 we performed a prospective study of 188 patients who underwent TTNB with CT guidance at University Hospital of Salerno, Italy.
