Purpose: To correlate hippocampal volumes obtained from brain structural imaging with histopathological patterns of hippocampal sclerosis (HS), in order to predict surgical outcome.
Methods: Patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) with HS were selected. Clinical data were assessed pre-operatively and surgical outcome in the first year post surgery.
The brown adipose tissue (BAT) mediates adaptive changes in metabolic rate by responding to the sympathetic nervous system through β-adrenergic receptors (AR). Here, we wished to define the role played by the ARβ isoform in this process. This study focused on the ARβ knockout mice (ARβKO), including responsiveness to cold exposure, diet-induced obesity, intolerance to glucose, dyslipidaemia and lipolysis in white adipose tissue (WAT).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: The aim of this study was to determine the expression of the immunohistochemical markers p16 and Ki-67 in cervical intraepithelial neoplasms and their influence on the level of agreement among different observers and for the same observer.
Methods: The study included 184 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasms previously confirmed through biopsies performed between 2005 and 2006. Three pathologists reviewed the biopsies by using hematoxylin-eosin staining to reach a consensus on the diagnosis.
Three types of beta adrenergic receptors (ARβ1-3) mediate the sympathetic activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT), the key thermogenic site for mice which is also present in adult humans. In this study, we evaluated adaptive thermogenesis and metabolic profile of a mouse with Arβ2 knockout (ARβ2KO). At room temperature, ARβ2KO mice have normal core temperature and, upon acute cold exposure (4 °C for 4 h), ARβ2KO mice accelerate energy expenditure normally and attempt to maintain body temperature.

Methods: Twenty-four patients were selected to undergo surgical treatment of endometriosis of the rectum and sigmoid colon with a segmental resection technique, followed by end-to-end anastomosis with a circular stapler from January 2005 to December 2007. The study included premenopausal women who underwent surgical treatment for deep endometriosis infiltrating the rectum with involvement of the rectum and sigmoid, reaching the level of the muscle layer, submucosa or mucosa.
Pathology studies in epilepsy patients bring useful information for comprehending the physiopathology of various forms of epilepsy, as well as aspects related to response to treatment and long-term prognosis. These studies are usually restricted to surgical specimens obtained from patients with refractory focal epilepsies. Therefore, most of them pertain to temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) and malformations of cortical development (MCD), thus providing information of a selected group of patients and restricted regions of the brain.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the apoptosis of neurons, astrocytes and immune cells from human patients that were infected with rabies virus by vampire bats bite. Apoptotic neurons were identified by their morphology and immune cells were identified using double immunostaining. There were very few apoptotic neurons present in infected tissue samples, but there was an increase of apoptotic infiltrating CD4+ and TCD8+ adaptive immune cells in the rabies infected tissue.

Although the material has been tested in other animal models, the evaluation did not include the larynx; hence, situations, such as tissue reaction, material absorption, and extrusion, need to be addressed to evaluate its usefulness as a material for laryngeal reconstruction.
Objective: To evaluate the medialization, tissue response, and healing of rabbit vocal folds, after the implantation of a membrane of bacterial cellulose.
Objective: Analyse technical aspects, effectiveness and morbidity of the endoscopic endonasal transphenoidal approach for pituitary adenomas.
Method: From January 2005 to September 2008, 30 consecutive patients underwent endoscopic endonasal resection of pituitary adenomas with a follow up from 3 to 36 months. Their medical charts were retrospectively analysed.
Objective: Image guided stereotactic biopsy (SB) provides cerebral tissue samples for histological analysis from minimal lesions or those that are located in deep regions, being crucial in the elaboration of therapeutic strategies, as well as the prevention of unnecessary neurosurgical interventions.
Method: Sixty patients with central nervous lesions underwent SB from November 1999 to March 2008. They were followed up to 65 months.
Objective: To describe five cases of giant carotid cavernous aneurysms which evolved with spontaneous thrombosis of internal carotid artery (STICA), with emphasis at epidemiology, clinical presentation, natural history, related factors and neurological outcome.
Method: There were 711 consecutives patients with 802 aneurysms with and without surgical treatment during a period of 19 years. We selected 35 patients with 40 carotid cavernous aneurysms (5%) of which 20 (50%) were giant aneurysms.
Unlabelled: Endometriosis is a disease of high prevalence and enigmatic origin. One aspect not yet clarified is the relationship between endometriosis and nerve tissue.
Objective: To evaluate, by immunohistochemistry, the presence of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibers in the uterosacral ligament and adjacent connective tissue in women with deep pelvic endometriosis and women without endometriosis.

Most meningiomas are benign tumours of arachnoidal origin, although a small number have high proliferative rates and invasive properties which complicate complete surgical resection and are associated with increased recurrence rates. Few prognostic indicators exist for meningiomas and further research is necessary to identify factors that influence tumour invasion, oedema and recurrence. Paraffin sections from 25 intracranial meningiomas were analysed for expression of the proteins vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptors Flt1 and Flk1, E-cadherin, metalloproteinases 2 and 9 (MMP2, MMP9), CD44, receptor for hyaluronic acid-mediated motility (RHAMM), hyaluronic acid (HA), CD45, cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), brain fatty acid binding protein (BFABP), Ki67, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA).

Clinical manifestations such as hemiparesis, seizures, ataxia, speech difficulties, cerebrospinal fluid findings as well as computed tomography are nonspecific. This leads the physician to pursue more frequent diseases that could explain those manifestations--toxic, metabolic, and/or infectious encephalopathy.

Conclusion: The compound gelatin-resorcin-formaldehyde (GRF) was a better stabilizing material for cartilage grafts in rabbits than butyl-2-cyanoacrylate. GRF was also better than the suture when comparing fixation of cartilage to the periosteum and inflammatory reaction.
Objective: Cartilage grafting is an interesting option for refinements on rhinoplasties.
Measles, accounting for nearly 1 million deaths each year, presents intense involvement of lymphoid organs and the lungs. The immune response in situ in the lungs was determined in blocks recovered from 42 necropsies of children who died from measles determined by immune cell phenotype (CD4, CD8, CD20, CD45RO, CD68, natural killer [NK], and antigen S-100 B [S100]) and cytokine production (interferon, tumor necrosis factor, interleukin [IL]-1, IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, and IL-12). Compared with the lungs of age-paired controls, patients with measles presented severe depletion of CD4+, CD20+, CD68+, NK+, and S100+ cells in alveolus- and bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue without depletion of CD8+ cells.
