Objective: To investigate the association between left epileptiform activity and language laterality indices (LI) in patients with right mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS).
Methods: Twenty-two patients with right MTS and 22 healthy subjects underwent fMRI scanning while performing a language task. LI was calculated in multiple regions of interest (ROI).
Objective: To compare memory outcomes after surgery for unilateral hippocampal sclerosis (HS)-associated epilepsy in patients with unilateral and bilateral ictal electrographic involvement.
Methods: We prospectively evaluated HS patients, aged 18-55 years and IQ ≥70. Left (L) and right (R) surgical groups underwent noninvasive video-EEG monitoring and Wada test.
Study Objectives: To investigate the association between sleep and cognitive decline of patients with mild-moderate Alzheimer's disease.
Methods: Observational, prospective study, including consecutive patients diagnosed with mild-moderate Alzheimer's disease. Cerebrospinal fluid was collected for amyloid-beta, total-tau, and phospho-tau levels determination.
We evaluated the influence of untreated obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) on the magnitude of cognitive decline and on several cognitive subdomains in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease. In this single-centre study, 144 patients were recruited prospectively from a cognitive impairment unit and underwent overnight polysomnography. The mean±sd change in the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) score at 12 months was 3.

Methods: Patients with mild-moderate AD, recruited prospectively from a cognitive impairment unit, underwent overnight polysomnography. OSA was defined as an apnea-hypopnea index > 5/h.
Purpose: To compare white matter bundles and fiber tract changes in seizure-free and non-seizure-free idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) patients.
Method: Forty adult patients with IGE underwent a 3 T brain MRI with DTI sequences. According to seizure control status, eighteen patients were classified as refractory (R) if they had presented at least one incapacitating seizure in the previous six months, while on appropriate antiepileptic drug treatment.
Objectives: To detect by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) the extent of microstructural integrity changes of the corpus callosum (CC) in patients with hippocampal sclerosis (HS) and to evaluate possible association with clinical characteristics.
Methods: Fourty-two patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and HS and 30 control subjects were studied with DTI. We grouped patients according to lesion side (left or right) HS.
Objective: Memory impairment is a recognized complication of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS). Epileptiform activity may negatively impact on cognition. We evaluated the impact of contralateral EEG involvement on memory in unilateral MTS (uMTS) patients.

Method: 31P-MRS of 33 patients with unilateral MTS was compared with 31 controls. The voxels were selected in the anterior, posterior insula-basal ganglia (AIBG, PIBG) and frontal lobes (FL).
Purpose: To evaluate the effect of contralateral electrographic involvement on memory performance (measured by neuropsychological and Wada memory testing) in patients with epilepsy associated with unilateral mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS).
Methods: We studied 51 patients with medically-refractory epilepsy associated with unilateral MTS (27 women, 30/51, left MTS) submitted to prolonged non-invasive video-EEG monitoring and bilateral Wada testing. According to ictal electrographic involvement, patients were classified as: Contralateral ictal involvement, when one or more seizures evolved with rhythmic activity in the temporal region contralateral to the MTS or exclusive ipsilateral ictal involvement if all seizures showed ictal EEG activity exclusively on the MTS side.
Hemispheric language dominance and isolated hemispheric memory function evaluation can be undertaken with the intracarotid injection of a general anesthetic agent (Wada test). Amobarbital has been traditionally used as the anesthetic agent, but legal and commercial constraints limit its use. We evaluated the use of etomidate as an alternative agent for the Wada test in a series of 54 consecutive adult patients with mesial temporal sclerosis undergoing presurgical evaluation for epilepsy surgery.

Methods: Adult patients with at least a one year diagnosis of both epilepsy and PNES, confirmed through video-electroencephalography (VEEG), were selected. Patients and a caregiver of their choice were interviewed and shown videos containing the patients' epileptic and PNES events.
Objective: To describe serial electroencephalographic (EEG) findings of three patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis.
Methods: Three women (age 15-34years) with confirmed anti-NMDAR encephalitis underwent serial EEG recordings. Continuous EEG for 72h was performed in one case and 3-day video-EEG monitoring was obtained in two cases.
Epilepsy comprises a set of neurologic and systemic disorders characterized by recurrent spontaneous seizures, and is the most frequent chronic neurologic disorder. In patients with medically refractory epilepsy, therapeutic options are limited to ablative brain surgery, trials of experimental antiepileptic drugs, or palliative surgery. Vagal nerve stimulation is an available palliative procedure of which the mechanism of action is not understood, but with established efficacy for medically refractory epilepsy and low incidence of side-effects.

Methods: We studied memory impairment profiles of verbal and nonverbal memory deficits with eight memory subtests of four neuropsychological instruments (two verbal and two nonverbal) in 87 right-handed patients with epilepsy associated with unilateral mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS; 44 right - R, 43 left - L) and 42 controls, with an IQ >70, at least 8 years of education, and without comorbidities.
A history of childhood trauma and the presence of dissociative phenomena are considered to be the most important risk factors for psychogenic nonepileptic seizure disorder (PNESD). This case-control study investigated 20 patients with PNESD and 20 with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) diagnosed by video/EEG monitoring who were matched for gender and age. Patients with both conditions were not included in the study.

Contralateral seizure usually leads to an indication of invasive monitoring. Contralateral seizure onset on invasive monitoring may contraindicate surgery.

Although seizure origin in GS has been well established, non-GS are poorly characterized. Their relationship with the HH and cognitive deterioration remains poorly understood.

Previous research showed that, while normal bone marrow cells lack expression of renin, myeloid blasts have been reported to do so. The aim was to study the expression of the renin gene by the use of real-time quantitative PCR (RQ-PCR) at diagnosis in acute myeloid leukemia patients (AML) and to assess its possible relevance in the prognosis and outcome of such patients.

This determination is accomplished by representing information flow direction via directed graphs, where focal electrodes are associated with high observed rates of pertinence to strongly connected subgraphs. Further clinical support to this finding is provided by results for an additional 9 cases of focal epilepsy cases.
