Loss of epithelial barrier integrity is considered an early step in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (CD), and the rate of enterocyte apoptosis is one of the determinants of the intestinal barrier function. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), one of the major proinflammatory mediators in CD, is one of the extrinsic signals which initiate apoptosis of enterocytes. The aim of this study was to investigate the early effects of experimental colitis on enterocyte apoptosis, and the effects of two anti-TNF treatments, infliximab (IFX) and etanercept (ETC).

An alteration of the intestinal barrier is considered to represent an early step in pathogenesis of Crohn's disease. The integrity of intestinal barrier function is guaranteed among other factors by enterocyte tight junction (TJ) proteins. Clinical and experimental data indicate the TNF-alpha to be the major responsible factor for these defects.

We investigated the effects of pea seedling (Latyrus cicera) histaminase, known to afford protection against the deleterious effects of cardiac ischemia/reperfusion, given to rats subjected to SAO/reperfusion-induced splanchnic injury. Histaminase (80 IU kg, 15 min before reperfusion) significantly reduced the drop of blood pressure and high mortality rate caused by SAO/reperfusion.
