Backgrounds/aims: Despite the advances in identifying risk factors, improving operative technique, and postoperative patient care, pancreatic leakage after pancreatic resection remains a highly debated topic. The aim of this study is to describe our technique and our initial experience with the intraoperative embolization of the main pancreatic duct with an Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer (Onyx®).
Methods: Two patients of 63 and 64 years underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for a cholangiocarcinoma of the extrahepatic bile duct and a pancreatic adenocarcinoma, respectively.
Aims: To quantify cardiovascular risk in persons with type-2 diabetes (DM) and established carotid atherosclerosis, without inducible myocardial ischemia by stress imaging.
Methods: We selected clinically healthy DM and subjects without DM (nonDM, controls) with non-obstructive carotid atherosclerosis and without significant coronary artery disease (CAD) by stress echocardiography. Coronary flow velocity reserve (CFR) was assessed during stress echocardiography.
Calculation of left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF) by Doppler stroke volume and end-diastolic volume (EDV) derived from LV diastolic diameter (LVIDD) could be reliable and feasible in clinical practice. In subjects with a wide range of LV volumes and EFs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to evaluate the accuracy of common formulas (Teichholz and Z method) to estimate EDV from LVIDD (EDVTeich; EDVZ) versus volumetric EDV. The accuracy of simplified Doppler-EF was tested in a separate study sample versus real-time 3-dimensional (RT3D) echocardiography and versus bidimensional Simpson's method.
