  • Acute lobar nephritis (ALN) is an inflammatory bacterial infection of the kidneys that usually affects one or more lobes and falls between uncomplicated pyelonephritis and intrarenal abscess in severity.
  • ALN can be tricky to diagnose due to vague symptoms and lab results, leading to it being likely underdiagnosed.
  • The gold standard for diagnosing ALN is a CT scan, although MRI can be used to reduce radiation; the treatment includes at least three weeks of intravenous antibiotics.

Acinar dysplasia congenital alveolar dysplasia and alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins belong to the diffuse developmental disorders (congenital lung dysplasia), very rare fatal disorders of infancy that occur early in lung development. A case of quickly fatal congenital lung dysplasia in a full-term infant is presented and underlines the necessity to suspect this disease in a newborn suffering from severe and refractory respiratory distress.
