Background: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) requires the presence of hepatitis B virus for replication and infection, and is associated with accelerated progression to cirrhosis and an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. Approximately 4% of Australians living with hepatitis B are infected with HDV, although it is likely that HDV remains underdiagnosed.
Objective: This paper highlights the importance of screening for HDV in patients living with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and provides an overview of diagnosis and treatment approaches for general practitioners (GPs), with the hope of reducing preventable liver-related morbidity and mortality in people living with CHB and HDV coinfection.
Objectives: To determine predictors of successful ictal single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) injections during Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) admissions for patients undergoing presurgical evaluation for drug-resistant focal epilepsy.
Methods: In this retrospective study, consecutive EMU admissions were analyzed at a single center between 2019 and 2021. All seizures that occurred during the admission were reviewed.
Background: Health care associated infections (HAIs) are a major health concern associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The relationship between frailty, a syndrome often associated with older individuals, and HAIs has not been investigated.
Aim: To determine if frailty scoring systems can assist in predicting the risk of developing HAIs in health care settings.
Aims: Women are overrepresented amongst patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF); however, the underpinning mechanism for this asymmetric distribution is unclear. Pregnancy represents a potential gender-specific risk factor for HFpEF. It leads to significant physiological adaption, and increasing parity has been associated with some cardiovascular risk.
