GSD IV accounts for approximately 3% of all GSD. The phenotype of GSD IV ranges from neonatal death to mild adult-onset disease with variable hepatic, muscular, neurologic, dermatologic, and cardiac involvement.

Cardiovascular (CV) disease is the main cause of death in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a clinical condition without any approved pharmacological therapy. Thus, we investigated the effects of ornithine aspartate (LOLA) and/or Vitamin E (VitE) on CV parameters in a steatohepatitis experimental model. Adult Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned (10 animals each) and treated from 16 to 28 weeks with gavage as follows: controls (standard diet plus distilled water (DW)), NAFLD (high-fat choline-deficient diet (HFCD) plus DW), NAFLD+LOLA (HFCD plus LOLA (200 mg/kg/day)), NAFLD+VitE (HFCD plus VitE (150 mg twice a week)) or NAFLD+LOLA+VitE in the same doses.

Background: Cholangiocarcinoma (CC) is a rare tumor that arises from the epithelium of the bile ducts. It is classified according to anatomic location as intrahepatic, perihilar, and distal. Intrahepatic CC (ICC) is rare in patients with cirrhosis due to causes other than primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Hypoxia-ischemia affecting the biliary epithelium may lead to biliary obstruction. We hypothesized that ischemic cholangiopathy involving disruption of the peribiliary vascular plexus could act as a triggering event in biliary atresia pathogenesis.

Aim: To assess the relationship between gut dysbiosis and cardiovascular risk (CVR) in an experimental model of steatohepatitis.
Methods: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to a control group ( = 10) fed a standard diet and an intervention group ( = 10) fed a high-fat choline-deficient diet for 16 wk.
Neonatal liver failure (NLF) is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, presenting as acute liver failure and/or congenital cirrhosis. Many affected patients show antenatal signs of fetal injury. There are several causes of NLF and early diagnosis is mandatory to elucidate the etiology and determine a specific treatment or the best management strategy.

Objective: To evaluate the taste buds of cirrhotic rats.
Background: Discovery and incorporation of biomarker panels to cancer studies enabled the understanding of genetic variation and its interference in carcinogenesis at molecular level. The potential association between single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) 309 and increased development of tumors, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, has been subject to several studies. This is the first study on this association conducted in Brazil.

Inactivation of apoptosis is implicated in tumour progression and chemotherapy resistance, and has been linked to the presence of endoplasmic reticulum stress. Melatonin, the main product of the pineal gland, exerts anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic and anti-angiogenic effects in HCC cells, but these effects still need to be confirmed in animal models.

However, intravenous therapy is needed for severe forms of tuberculosis with extensive gastrointestinal involvement. The authors report an immunocompetent patient with gastrointestinal TB who was successfully managed with a combination of surgical intervention and anti-TB medications, and discuss the importance of injectable anti-TB medications in the management of severe gastrointestinal TB.

Five-yr survival after transplant was estimated using the Metroticket Calculator, and observed survival was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Metroticket-predicted survival was compared between deceased and surviving patients using the Mann-Whitney test.

This study was aimed to analyze oxidative stress and cell damage in a multistage model of liver carcinogenesis induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) in rats. Male Wistar rats weighing 145-150 g were divided into three groups: control, precancerous lesions (PL) (which received 100 mg DEN once a week every 6 weeks up to 28 weeks), and advanced HCC (50 mg DEN once/twice per week up to 19 weeks).

Many studies in animals have demonstrated similarities in histological pattern with human cirrhosis. Just like the relation between cirrhosis and increased lipid peroxidation (LPO), which contributes to the worsening of the disease.

We investigated, for the first time, the toxicity of lipid-core nanocapsules (LNCs) containing a polymeric wall of poly(ε-caprolactone) and a coating of polysorbate 80 used as drug delivery devices (~245nm) in Wistar rats after single- and repeated-dose treatments. The suspensions were prepared by interfacial deposition of the polymer and were physicochemically characterized.

Objective: To determinate the impact of aging of the donor on the cold ischemia injury in rat livers and compare UW and FBP.
Purpose: To verify the frequency of postsurgical pelvic adhesion formation in an experimental animal model using videolaparoscopy.
Methods: Experimental study in a sample of 11 non-pregnant female rabbits, aged 5 to 7 months. After general anesthesia, access to the abdominal cavity was performed by an open puncture technique, with 10mm optics, placing two other 5 mm trochars under direct visualization, in the iliac fossae.
Objective: The present study examined the effects of intraportal infusion of L-arginine on ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/RI) in pig livers, by observing changes in the liver function, liver cell morphology, and changes in the mitochondrial ultrastructure.
Background: The involvement of the nitric oxide (NO) pathway in the reperfusion-ischemic phenomenon is complex and not fully understood. Likewise, little is known about the possible benefit of intraportal infusion of L-arginine (substrate for the NO synthesis) on liver I/RI.
Background Data: The beneficial effects of ischemic preconditioning (IPC) on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/RI) have been described. However, the way in which IPC causes the changes in mitochondrial ultrastructure seen in hepatic I/RI is not well understood.
Objective: The objective of the present study was to determine whether IPC protects the liver from changes in mitochondrial structure and caspase 3 activity in the early phase of post-ischemic injury.
Background And Aims: Endoscopic augmentation of the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has been reported in an experimental short-term study. We assessed whether endoscopic augmentation of the EGJ with PMMA is durable, safe, and efficacious after 6 months in mini-pigs.
Methods: Ten mini-pigs were studied under anesthesia.
