Novel studies on typical synthesized magnetite nanoparticles were encapsulated into a poly (butylene succinate)/poly (ethylene glycol) copolymer (PBS-PEG). PBS was chosen because of its biocompatibility characteristics necessary for biomedical applications. PEG, as part of the macromolecular structure, increases the hybrid system's solubility in an aqueous environment, increasing the circulation time of the material in the bloodstream.

An operationally simple and highly selective method for the decarboxylation of fatty acids under remarkably mild conditions is described herein. The activation of the aliphatic carboxylic acids by esterification with -hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) enabled efficient deoxygenation to synthesize -alkanes in up to 67% yield, employing inexpensive PMHS as a hydrogen source, NiCl·6HO, bipyridine, and zinc in THF. In contrast to the conventional thermo-catalytic approaches, this protocol does not require high temperature and high pressure of hydrogen gas to deoxygenate biomass-derived carboxylic acids, thus representing an attractive alternative for producing drop-in biofuels.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a life-threatening vascular event with environmental and genetic determinants. Recent VTE genome-wide association studies (GWAS) meta-analyses involved nearly 30 000 VTE cases and identified up to 40 genetic loci associated with VTE risk, including loci not previously suspected to play a role in hemostasis. The aim of our research was to expand discovery of new genetic loci associated with VTE by using cross-ancestry genomic resources.

Poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) has been used for the encapsulation of phthalocyanine motived by its biocompatibility and biodegradability. Many studies have already been done to evaluate the influence of parameters used in the PLGA nanoparticle synthesis but without the evaluation of the combinatory interaction between these parameters on the nanoparticulate properties. Ga(III)-phthalocyanine (GaPc) was encapsulated into the PEGlated PLGA-nanoparticles and the individual and combinatory effects of the emulsification time, the method used for the nanoparticle synthesis and the temperature of the aqueous phase was evaluated on the size, entrapment efficiency, efficacy of nanoparticle recovery, residual PVA and zeta potential value using a 2 factorial design (FD).

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared two extraction methods for cell wall-bound phenolics from maize tissues, focusing on efficiency and cost.
  • Method 1 took longer (6 days) and was more expensive, using a solid-phase extraction cartridge, while Method 2 was quicker (2 days) and cost-effective, utilizing ethyl acetate.
  • Both methods were found to be reliable, with Method 1 extracting more 4-coumarate and Method 2 yielding more ferulate, making Method 2 a preferred choice for large-scale plant breeding research.

The Mediterranean corn borer (MCB), Sesamia nonagrioides Lef, is an important pest of maize in temperate areas, causing significant stalk lodging and yield losses. The main goals of this study were to determine possible changes in chemical traits (phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, sugars, fibers, and lignin) during plant development after the flowering stage and to assess how those traits may differ in diverse genotypes of maize, such as MCB resistant and susceptible. Higher values for some particular traits in more mature tissues seemed to increase their effectiveness against the MCB attack.

Recurrent idiopathic priapism is a rare condition that, if not properly treated, may lead to impaired quality of life and erectile dysfunction. Treatment can be achieved by prevention of priapism episodes with systemic therapy or by early intervention with intracavernosal self-injection of sympathomimetic agents. We describe a case of a young patient with recurrent idiopathic priapism who has used etilefrine self-injection for the past 10 years with good efficacy and libido and erectile function preservation.

Purpose: To evaluate the hypothesis that a 7-day period of indwelling catheter after radical retropubic prostatectomy is effective and safe without the need of performing cystography.

Methods: In the period from January of 2000 to July of 2002, 73 patients underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy, and these patients were prospectively randomized in 2 groups: Group 1-37 patients who had the urethral catheter removed 7 days after the procedure, and Group 2-36 patients who had the catheter removed 14 days after the surgery. The 2 groups were similar, the surgeons and the technique were the same, and no cystography was performed to evaluate the presence of leaks.
